Oh dear, we’re back on the acids! Not dangerous ones or illegal ones. Essential ones. Essential Amino Acids, the building blocks of life itself. That’s essential! Proteins could not exist without the proper combination of amino acids.
It is protein that provides the cellular structure for all living things. Proteins are the most abundant cellular components, including enzymes, antibodies, hormones, transport molecules and muscle tissue and play a key role in nearly every biological system. In it’s various forms, protein participates in the vital chemical processes that support life.
Amino acids can be classified as:-
Essential – required in the normal diet as your body can’t produce enough for normal bodily functions.
Non-essential – meaning produced in the body, not required to be supplied in your diet.
Amino acids are involved in a variety of important roles in every part of your body. Every bodily system requires amino acids to function, your immune system, digestive system, metabolism, detoxification and glucose balance. Your central nervous system, for example, cannot function without amino acids which act as neurotransmitters, or precursors to neurotransmitters.
Amino acids play a vital role by allowing dietary nutrients to be assimilated by your body.
What the heck are EFAs? I thought fats were bad, and acids were downright dangerous! Well, they’re called essential because they are vital to the healthy function of every cell. Chances are that you have been unknowingly eliminating these from your diet.
If you are like most people you’ve probably spent the last decade cutting down on fat. Sure, studies linked a high-fat diet to an increased risk of heart disease and cancer. However, in our attempts to eat the right foods we have reduced our consumption of the good fats, namely EFAs which are cruicial to good health.
EfAs are the main structural parts of every cell membrane in the body and is necessary for both healthy cell function and for the regulators that control your body’s well-being. They are needed to regulate the proper fluidity and flexibility of cell walls, which keeps beneficial substances within our cells and harmful substances out. There are 2 major series of EFAs – Omega-3 and Omega-6.
Your body uses EFAs to produce prostaglandin that is so vital to sustain life. Prostaglandin works like a localized tissue hormone-like system and works hand-in-hand with hormones to carry out regulatory activities. Prostaglandin imbalances can lead to the loss of your body’s ability to protect itself. For instance, certain prostaglandins control the secretion of a protective stomach coating, preventing your digestive acids from acting on the walls of your stomach.
EFAs and prostaglandins are crucial to proper functioning of the immune system. Anything hampering this regulatory system results in a weakened immune system, setting the stage for immune related disorders.
We take it for granted. We ignore it’s needs. We take antibiotics which wreak havoc with it’s flora. What am I taking about? Your colon, and it’s trillions of beneficial bacteria.
Our gastrointestinal tract is home to a thriving community of good, and bad bacteria. We couldn’t manage without them (particularly the good ones). Our intestinal flora perform countless health-enhancing tasks, like:-
Producing organic acids to maintain the healthy pH in your colon
Producing enzymes and B vitamins for digestive health and nutrient absorption.
Creating a barrier to unfriendly organisms and crowding out bad bacteria.
Protecting us from cancer by:-
Having the ability to bind and deactivate cancer causing substances in our food (like pyrolysates and N-nitrosamines which result from cooking meat at high temperatures)
Keeping the population of bad bacteria in check. An overgrowth of bad bacteria has a detrimental effect on hormones, causing an oversupply which causes excess hormones to absorbed into the bloodstream. Problems associated with excess hormones include, fibrocystic breast disease, PMS, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, prostate enlargement and breast, ovary, uterus and prostate cancer.
To avoid these potentially nasty problems we need to be kind to our colons and supplement our diets with friendly bacteria. These are called prebiotics.
It’s not something we talk about. Generally we don’t even want to think about what’s going on inside there. Unless we have a problem. Even then we find it embarrassing.
Recognizing your colon as a major organ which affects the way you feel every day is a step towards improving your life.
The old saying is “death begins in the colon” is literally true. However, I recommend you turn this into a more positive “health begins in the colon”.
Our colon’s function is to act as your body’s sewage system. Effectively eliminating dangerous toxins. Problems occur when this process becomes inefficient, then retained waste leads to re-absorption of toxins into your bloodstream.
Are laxatives the answer? Absolutely not. These may seem like an easy fix. They are not. You can become dependent on them, and over time your colon’s normal ability to naturally eliminate waste will be permanently destroyed. Laxatives should be considered only a very temporary solution to a specific problem.
What your body needs is fiber (or fibre depending on where on the plant you live). Fiber is a safe and natural way of enhancing your body’s ability to rid itself of wastes and toxins.
Fiber acts as:-
A Bulking agent– fiber absorbs water in your digestive tract, bulking out the waste matter and allowing it to pass through more easily. This reduces the transit time, therefore reducing your exposure to toxins in the waste. Think of a sponge soaking up the toxins. Studies have confirmed a link between having enough fiber in your diet and a lower risk of colorectal cancer.
ACleansing agent– fiber helps to cleanse the colon by gently sweeping the colon clean of compacted, putrefying, waste materials and helping to eliminate excess cholesterol and dietary toxins. Think of a brush physically cleaning your colon.
Fiber also helpsnormalize blood sugarlevels.
The aim of the game is cleansing, detoxifying and improving transit time.
The issue with our modern diet is that it is severely low on fiber. Processed food, refined carbohydrates like bread, biscuits, pastas, soft drinks and polished rice are almost devoid of fiber and nutrients.
As a consequence we suffer conditions like:-
aches and pains
insulin resistance, and eventually diabetes
increased risk of cancer
Where can you get high quality fiber? Eat a diet which includes high fiber fresh fruits and vegetables. Supplement your diet with high fiber.
We are suffering from an overload of toxins, exceeding your body’s capacity to cleanse and detoxify itself properly. We need help! Your body is crying out for assistance in detoxifying itself. Heed the call and do something about it.
So give your body a chance to repair itself.
An overload of toxins means we have trouble eliminating enough waste products. Accumulating these toxic wastes means our bodies suffer inflammation and irritation of our organs and cells, impairing healthy body function at a cellular and organ level. Our systems are impaired causing allergies, skin problems, obesity, headaches, fatigue, poor concentration and memory, arthritis, cancer and generally lowered immune capability.
Our bodies need optimal conditions to function properly.
“(NaturalNews) The rice bran ingredient manufacturer NutraCea has entered an agreement with HerbalScience Singapore to create two joint ventures to expand research, development and marketing of products based on stabilized rice bran.
The two companies are forming a third company, Rice Science, to develop stabilized rice bran extracts for use as a nutraceutical ingredient in foods and beverages. Rice Science will be 80 percent owned by NutraCea.
According to NutraCea, stabilized rice bran contains a variety of ingredients that provide benefits for preventing or treating arthritis and diabetes and improving immune health. Among the reasons cited for rice bran’s nutraceutical value are its high content of the vitamin E complexes referred to as tocotrienols and gamaoryzanol; B vitamins; betacarotne; and fiber. Rice bran is also high in powerful antioxidants.
“We know that stabilized rice bran contains a rich bounty of natural compounds at therapeutic levels,” said NutraCea Chief Executive Officer Brad Edson. “We believe by isolating these specific elements, we can create quantifiable isolates that have the potential to be measurably effective in dealing with some of the most serious health threats that we face today.”
In white rice, the bran and germ are discarded from the rice seed, and much of the nutritional content along with it…”

The saying goes “You are what you eat”. Is this true? NO. Why not? You are only what you can digest and absorb.
What does that mean? The food we eat is made out of large complex molecules which can’t possibly enter our bloodstream and cells. Therefore they must be broken down into much smaller units before your body can use it. This process is done by digestive enzymes.
An abundance of digestive enzymes is needed to assist in digestion, assimilation and utilization of the nutrients found in food and in the elimination of waste.
Enzymes in food are destroyed by heating, processing, freezing, preservatives and other chemical additives. As you age your natural supply of enzymes is depleted. Stress also contributes to enzyme depletion. So supplementing your diet with enzymes is important to allow proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.
What are the consequences of a shortage of enzymes? Well, believe it or not you can become overweight. One of the major causes of obesity is poor nutrition. When absorption is poor your simply don’t get the nutrients you need. Your body’s deep, silent hunger for healthier nutrition is expressed as a desire for more food. Craving for food when you have already eaten sufficient is an indication of your body crying out for nourishment. If you mistakenly eat low nutrient, high calorie food your body will continue to crave for nutrients, while storing the excess calories as fat. One way of curbing cravings is supplementing your diet with digestive enzymes.
Food allergies are often the result of poor digestion. When food is not completely digested, larger than normal food particles are absorbed into the circulation. When these incompletely digested pieces of food molecules enter the blood stream, they are recognized by the immune system as foreign. When the immune system launches an attack, your body experiences a food related allergic reaction.
Bio N-Zymes are an effective way to get the digestive enzymes you need. CLICK HERE to find out more about them.
Our immune system is constantly on alert, watching over us to protect us against the many enemies that may threaten our health. Bacteria, viruses, foreign proteins, toxins, mutated cells and cancerous cells are examples.
Before we even show any signs of ill heath, our immune system will launch an attack if there is an invasion. If our immune system is successful at curbing the problem, you may not even know much about it. You may simply experience a day when you felt a bit “off” and not exhibit any obvious symptoms of infection.
A weakened immune system reduces our ability to resist infections and makes it more likely that we will experience allergies and autoimmune disorders. Most debilitating diseases do not manifest symptoms until it’s too late.
Nature has equipped us with built-in defense, which is very important to overcome infections, our wonderful immune system. A strong immune system is still our best defense. It’s our duty to do all we can to support and boost it and make it strong.
Antioxidants have become part of our vocabulary in the last 10 years. Before that they were little known, understood or appreciated. Even today you will find pockets of people who do not believe in the benefits. Oh well, their loss!
To fully understand the role of antioxidants you need to know about free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules which “steal” parts of our cells to stabilize themselves. This means our cells become damaged:-
Free radicals damage cell membranes and disrupt their function in transporting nutrients, water and oxygen into your cells and in removing wastes from the cell. Cellular function becomes sluggish.
Our cells genetic material can be damaged, causing the cell’s ability to replenish and repair itself to be impaired.
Your immune cells can be attacked, rendering them incapable of defending your body from infections.
Free radicals also oxidize LDL (Bad cholesterol) causing arteriosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries).
Oxidization of proteins and lipids in the body cause a build up of lipofuscin. Accumulations of lipofuscin can accelerate the aging process and damage your organs. Lipofuscin can be observed in the form of visible age spots.
Free radicals are also the cause of AGE – Advanced Glycation End-Products – The accumulation of AGE is the main cause of visible premature aging, like wrinkles and brown spots on the skin.
Sources of free radicals are:-
Normal bodily functions, like breathing and energy production
Toxins from environmental pollution in the air, water, cooking processes and our food
Electro magnetic radiation – from TV, computers, ovens, refrigerators and other electrical equipment.
UV radiation – from sunlight and fluorescent lamps.
Stress factors, like work stress, infections, trauma. Aging itself accelerates the body’s production of Free Radicals.
Since, it’s very difficult to avoid most of the factors which generate free radicals our only option is to ensure we get a regular supply of antioxidants to minimize their effects.
Symptoms of free radical damage are:-
Premature aging signs such as age spots, wrinkles, sagging of the skin
Degenerative diseases such as arthritis, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, cancer, vision problems, cataracts etc.
Antioxidants are compounds found in nature (food) which disarm free radicals in your body. They are a complex group of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phyto-nutrients, and phyto-chemicals that help protect your body from free radical damage.
MEDIA RELEASE: Food Matters – but is it the answer to Cancer?
A new documentary claims we can improve chronic illness with simple self-care.
A provocative new documentary called Food Matters, launched globally on May 30, aims to further jolt the trillion dollar worldwide so-called ‘sickness industry’ by declaring a range of scientifically verifiable solutions for curing disease naturally.
Nutritionists turned filmmakers James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch, have produced a bold film
based on a challenging and potentially startling message; that with the right kind of foods, supplements, and detoxification processes, we can prevent, arrest, and even reverse chronic illness. “This film will shatter the belief fed to us by modern medicine that there is ‘a pill for every ill’,” said Colquhoun. “We’re not suggesting that pharmaceutical drugs don’t have their place, we’re saying that our overburdened health care practitioners perhaps do not have the time to educate people about alternative treatments and healthy living.”
“There are simple lifestyle changes that we as individuals can make to start reversing the increasing levels of serious illness,” said ten Bosch.
At a time when our struggling health system is under review and global health care reform is urgent, Food Matters brings together the world’s leaders in nutrition and natural healing to present astonishing new claims about ways to treat depression, obesity, alcoholism, heart disease, cancer, dementia, and a host of other debilitating conditions, without the need for drugs or surgery.
Can high doses of Vitamin C really cure cancer? Can two handfuls of cashews provide the therapeutic
equivalent of a prescription dose of prozac? According to one of the film’s contributors, author and therapeutic nutrition specialist with over 30 years experience in natural healing, Andrew W. Saul, these claims are entirely viable. Saul says that our health care systems are in fact disease care systems, and that there is no money to be made in reducing levels of sickness and disease. He states: “Good health makes a lot of sense, but it doesn’t make a lot of dollars.”
Another of the film’s expert commentators, Charlotte Gerson, founder of the Gerson Institute which is dedicated to healing and preventing chronic diseases using natural therapies and has helped improve the lives of countless cancer patients using the Gerson Therapy, claims that a normal, healthy body has such powerful defences that it cannot and will not develop cancer or any other chronic disease.
Aiming to step in where Michael Moore’s attack on the American health care system with the film Sicko
stopped short, Colquhoun and ten Bosch hope Food Matters will educate people about ways to prevent sickness, rather than encourage them to rely on a system already in crisis to treat symptoms once sickness takes hold.
“If we can help people become more aware of the choices available to them, they can start to reduce their reliance on the ‘sickness industry’,” explained Colquhoun. “It’s about education, not just medication. With access to solid information, people invariably make good choices for their health.”
To ensure the information in their film is available to as many people around the world as quickly as possible, Colquhuon and ten Bosch have taken a departure from traditional distribution models. The film will be available on DVD & for viewing online though video streaming provider ‘Vividas’, using the same technology as the smash hit ‘The Secret’.
“The internet is a ready and accessible medium for us,” continued Colquhoun. “People all over the world are able to receive this message and apply it to their own lives immediately.”
Food Matters was produced in Australia and launched globally on 30 May, 2008.
Are you getting enough? Here are a few reasons why we have difficulty getting sufficient vitamins, minerals and trace minerals from our normal diets:-
The plants (fruits and vegetables) that we are eating are now grown over and over in the same soil year after year. The soil has long been depleted of nutritional content; therefore the nutritional value of the crop grown in the soil is also depleted. In an attempt to improve the crop, man-made chemicals are added as fertilizer to make the plants grow faster. However, these are not the minerals required by your body.
Food processing such as cooking, heating, freezing, adding preservatives and other chemical additives destroys vital vitamins, minerals and trace minerals, hence putting a further strain on our wellbeing.
Food refining, e.g. to make white rice, white flour, and white sugar removes more than 90% of the nutrients.
Coffee, tea, soft drinks and processed foods interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals. Tea and coffee, for instance, reduces the absorption rate of iron and vitamin Bs by more than 70%. Since these are vital to the production of red blood cells which transports nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, excess consumption of tea and coffee leaves us constantly tired and drained of energy.
Stress puts an extra load on the body and increases the need for larger amounts of nutrients. Conditions of stress are produced by drugs, certain prescriptive medications, chemicals, infections, noise, excessive tiredness, psychological upsets, anxiety, resentments and a whole host of other factors.
Vitamins, minerals and trace minerals are the basic essentials for good health and peak energy.
With the exception of some Vitamin Bs and Vitamin D, they are not made in the body, and therefore must be obtained from our food and drinks. They are mutually dependent upon each other for proper utilization. Importantly, a lack of one of these vitamins can cause a lack of other vitamins as well. We are complicated!
These nutrients assist in the formation of hormones, blood cells, nervous system, chemical and genetic material. They are needed for all the chemical reactions in the body. Without these vital elements, many of these essential reactions would slow down or cease, and the body would fail to function.
Put simply, if our organs are not getting the nutrients they need, they simply go into a slow process of degeneration.
In Part 3 I listed the spectrum of nutrient groups we need to achieve optimal health. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s kinda daunting!
Imagine the careful selection of food ingredients to get a balanced diet. The problem is that we would need to consume a whole lot of very nutritious food. Put simply, it’s difficult!
OK go for supplementation! That’s easier to achieve, but how expensive is it to take all the nutritional supplements you need? I know you probably have your favorite supplement. I do too. I consume spirulina, chlorella and stabilized rice bran on a very regular basis.
The secret to easily achieving a regular intake of all the nutrients you need is to combine everything we need in one product.
Simple really. So what is this revolutionary supplement?
Nn Total Nutrition – an advanced phyto-nutrient rich superfood, which contains 79 bio-available nutraceutical ingredients in a proprietary formula. This product offers the widest variety of nutrients in all the groups in just ONE convenient, economical and great tasting formula.
Along with eliminating those bad habits referred to in Part 2 of this series, we must change what we are doing and eating.
Unfortunately, it’s simply not enough to stop the bad stuff, we have to intake lots of the good stuff. We have a lot to overcome, to have average health, let alone optimal health.
Basically, in order for our bodies to function at it’s optimal level, we need a whole spectrum of nutrients. These nutrients can be grouped as below:-
Vitamin, minerals, trace minerals
Essential fatty acids (EFA)
Essential amino acids
Probiotics and prebiotics
Cleansing and detoxification herbs
Boy, that’s a whole heap of stuff we need! Do have any idea how to achieve the result you need?
The problem we have is that a so-called balanced diet only considers proportions of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Most people don’t even know about, say, alkaline promoters. Did your doctor ever discuss brainfood or antioxidants with you? I’ll bet that didn’t happen. Umm, something to think about.
The answer is supplementation. Natural supplements should not be considered alternative or complimentary therapies or medicines. They are natural foods, not drugs.
