The dieting world is full of myths, hearsay and soundbites.
We all have heard them a thousand times, but does that make them true? Is it really a good idea to ban sugar completely from your diet? Or how about not touching fat and alcohol ever again? Nearly all movie stars and singers are on some such diet. However, this approach is not exactly good for you because a diet low in carbohydrates and calories forces the body to use existing carbs located in the liver and the muscles. In time, this diet leads to weight loss mainly from water stored in the body, instead of fat, and also strains the internal organs.
And people should not be so afraid of potatoes, bread and pasta, the leading sources of carbohydrates. Carbs are actually good for you because they quell the feeling of hunger without bringing in too many calories. Naturally, you also have to pay attention to how these foods are prepared. French fries are not a low-fat food. Drinking a certain quantity of water every day is a good idea because it keeps the body hydrated and fills the stomach. Water also keeps the intestines healthy by facilitating the movements of undigested food to the exit point. However, simply drinking water does not trigger weight loss. There is only one way to lose weight and that is to burn up the existing fat and water cannot do that. Nor should a diet be judged solely by how much weight is lost per week. Some people claim that a diet can be considered effective if the weekly loss of weight is above two pounds. Frankly, two pounds per week is a lot of weight to lose and you can be sure that not all of it is fat, but also the lean tissue that makes up the muscles.
Another myth claims that fat is absolutely bad for you. It’s not. Quite on the contrary, the body needs some fat in order to get the important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K circulating through the cardiovascular system. Moreover, fat also brings into the body the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 that cannot be synthesized in the body. And last of all comes the idea that a diet or eating plan is enough in itself and does not have to be coupled with exercising. But exercising is the most effective way of burning up the extra calories stored as fat. Simply sitting at your desk all day long is not going to do the trick, regardless of what diet you’re on. Remember that a diet that has plenty of food (the right kind of food) and plenty of exercise is far better than sitting on the sofa and drinking cabbage soup every six hours. It works faster and is less stressful to your body.

Researchers from the Athens Medical School in Greece and published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention conducted a study which found drinking green tea may help prevent heart disease and stroke.
“A couple of cups a day would probably be a good dose for people,” researcher Charalambos Vlachopoulos said. “This is the first study to show these effects for green tea.”
Prior research has indicated that black tea can improve cardiovascular health, leading researchers suspect that green tea might even more effective. Many of the beneficial health effects of tea are attributed to its high content of antioxidant polyphenols, especially flavonoids. Most of these polyphenols are destroyed, however, by the fermentation process that makes tea black. This is why green tea has a water-extractable polyphenol content of between 30 and 40 percent, while the content in black tea is only 3 to 10 percent.
In the current study, researchers had 14 volunteers drink three different beverages, on three separate occasions: 6 grams of green tea, 125 milligrams of caffeine (the amount found in 6 grams of green tea) and a cup of hot water. They measured the flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the participants’ blood vessels at 30, 90 and 120 minutes after consumption.
FMD is a widely used measure of blood vessel health.
The participants’ FMD improved by an average of 3.9 percent within 30 minutes of drinking green tea. It did not change at all in those who drank either the caffeine or hot water.
“Green tea is consumed less in the Western world than black tea, but it could be more beneficial because of the way it seems to improve [circulatory] function,” Vlachopoulos said.
He also noted that a number of studies have linked green tea to various cancer-fighting effects.

It was held by a company called Wenatex who sells their sleep systems direct to consumers (not through retail outlets). It was the type of seminar where you are supplied with a meal. Overall, I enjoyed the evening. I’m always interested learning something new and I met some very nice people. The presenter was well informed and there was no high pressure selling.
The night was certainly informative, with a lot of details on sleep patterns (recordings of sleep stages in a sleep lab), how dust mites live in our bedding (very nasty critters) and adversley affect our health.
There is no doubt their product is extremely well researched and manufactured. It includes technologies like silver treated fibre for it’s antibacterial properties. A herbal (17 herbs) inlay to induce a calm state. Fully washable pillows, quilts and mattress cover. The mattress core is a combination of different types of “foam like” materials (I’m sure that calling it foam is a very inaccurate description for the advanced materials used) zoned to support your body correctly.
