15 Ways to a Healthier New Year.

At this time of year we think about our future and what we would like to achieve in the New Year.  Many of us will have achieving good health and, perhaps, weight loss on our minds.

So it’s time to act on your thoughts and make some beneficial changes, simple things like:-

  1. Stop drinking sodas – drink purified water instead (add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice) or drink green tea with lemon juice.
  2. Drink plenty of water each day – are you hungry or just dehydrated?
  3. Reduce your consumption of bottled fruit juices – make your own.
  4. Reduce your sugar intake (when you stop drinking sodas you’ll get this benefit).  Use only natural sugar substitutes.
  5. Reduce the quantity of processed foods you consume. There are hidden sugars and fats, plus lots of chemical additives you’ll want to avoid. Read labels – if you need a science degree to understand the ingredients you probably shouldn’t eat it.
  6. Reduce your salt intake, use only natural quality salt which is chemical free and contains minerals.
  7. Add flavor with herbs, spices or lemon juice instead of adding salt.
  8. Reduce you fat intake. Consume only healthy fats. Learn more about dietary fats
  9. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Reduce the quantity of meat you consume.  Look at the portions on your plate – make sure vegetables make up 75%.
  10. Make your plate like a rainbow of colors – eat a variety of colorful vegetables.
  11. Use a smaller plate and drink more water.
  12. Learn about Anti Cancer truths
  13. Read about how you can rejuvenate your body at a cellular level.
  14. Learn how an acidic body is bad for you and how to achieve an alkaline body.
  15. Improve your Nutrition Intelligence

Antioxidants Are Also Anti-fat

Recent research by neuroendocrinoligist Dr Zane Andrews of Monash University says that free radicals can make us fat.

The oxidising free radicals damage the cells which tell us when we have had enough to eat.  In other words, your “fullness” switches gets turned off. More damage occurs to your fullness signal cells with reach passing year. The result is that your “stop eating” mechanism gets weaker and weaker.

It’s impossible to avoid free radicals, however, all is not lost!  The best way to protect yourself is by including lots of antioxidants into your diet. One of the easiest ways is to add a top quality antioxidant product to your diet.  I recommend Maqui SuperBerry made from the Chilean Maqui berry – proven to have the highest antioxidant rating of any fruit.  Take advantage of the current special on Maqui Superberry – The Highest Antioxidant Superfruit in the World!

Seasons Greetings To All – Share the JOY

It’s the time of year to spend time with family and friends and be grateful for everyone and everything in your life.  No matter what your cultural heritage or beliefs, everyone believes in family.

Don’t let another moment pass without letting people know how much you love and appreciate them.

Remember to say a heartfelt hello to neighbors and that lonely person who lives down the street.  Share some joy with them, you may never know the difference you have made.

I send my personal best wishes to all, and trust that everyone spreads some joy around.

Acai Berry – High ORAC Value, Good for Health

There is a lot of buzz about Acai Berry products on many TV Shows and Network News programs, and rightly so.  Many doctors and nutritionists agree the acai berry is considered to be one of the top superfoods.

In our quest to bring you information on quality products which are beneficial to your health and well-being I have found an Acai Berry product which is certified to contain genuine acai berries. It’s called Acai Burn Plus.

Like many things, not all acai berry products are alike.  Quality always counts. Being certified organic you can be assured of a quality product. Not only are the berries in Acai Burn Plus certified organic, they come directly from the Brazilian Amazon! Many other manufacturers grow their berries elsewhere or buy them from other countries where they are mass produced and their effectiveness is significantly decreased.  The reason for reduced effectiveness is a lower ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity).

The growing conditions can affect the phyto-nutrient value, of course plant grown in “kinder” conditions may not develop to same polyphenol and antioxidant qualities as those grown in their native environment.

What does Acai Burn Plus offer you?

  • A Natural way to assist weight loss and detoxification
  • Increased energy levels
  • Anti-aging and skin improvement through reduction of free radical damage
  • Brazilian Grown quality Acai Berries
  • Highest ORAC Value
  • Formulated and packaged in FDA certified facility in California

Is Your Digestive System Killing You?

The expression “Death Begins in the Colon” may or may not be accurate, but few will argue that a poorly functioning digestive system can make you feel ill.

Digestion actually begins when our senses react to the look and smell of food. Ever had a “mouth watering” response to looking at food, or smelling it?  Saliva is activated, getting us ready to digest our food.

The next step is chewing – Chewing is an important step in the digestive process, breaking down food into particles our systems can handle. We are frequently “eating on the run”and not chewing our food properly, which hampers your digestion.

Food then passes down through your esophagus on it’s way to your stomach – rhythmic muscle movements called peristalsis aid the transition from your mouth to your stomach.

Your stomach is a flexible sack-like organ which churns food and produces digestive acids to further the digestive process. It’s essential to know that Nature expected us to get digestive enzymes from our food to help this process, though for a variety of factors (like eating cooked food) it’s difficult for us to get enough of these enzymes. Read more about enzymes and download our free enzyme information booklet.

In the next part of it’s journey your food enters enters the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, followed by the jejunum and the ileum (the final part of the small intestine). In the small intestine, bile (produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder), pancreatic enzymes, and other naturally produced digestive enzymes produced by the inner wall of the small intestine further assist in the breakdown of food.

Your Colon
Your Colon

The next step is the large intestine where some of the water and electrolytes (chemicals like sodium) are removed from the food. Many microbes (like good bacteria and probiotics) in the large intestine help in the digestion process. The first part of the large intestine is called the cecum (the where your appendix is connected). then travels upward in the ascending colon. The food travels across the abdomen in the transverse colon, goes back down the other side of the body in the descending colon, and then into the sigmoid colon.

At the end of this long, complicated journey wastes are excreted via the anus.

So you can understand how this long process may be compromised by bad eating habits, lack of proper hydration, lack of enzymes, lack of probiotics and build-up of toxic matter in your colon.

Lose Weight With Water

The human body is mostly water trapped inside the fragile walls of cells.

We drink water to maintain the optimum level of hydration in our bodies, to flush the toxins out and cleanse the body, to cool off, to keep our joints lubricated and to assist in the food digestion process. Although they don’t realize it, most people are suffering from chronic dehydration.

The minimum daily recommended water intake is 2 liters, because this is how much water the body uses throughout the day through perspiration, respiration, urination and other bodily functions. Without replenishing lost water, the body goes into dehydration mode and all functions start to suffer. Water is essential to life and proper bodily function.

Your the metabolism is dependent on water to work properly. Without enough water, the process of breaking food down and converting it to energy slows down dramatically, which means that too few calories are burnt and little weight is lost. Not drinking enough water can be compared to “running on fumes” and if you’re dieting and you seem to have hit the plateau, then you are probably not drinking enough water. When the metabolism slows down, weight loss slows down even more dramatically, especially since exercising becomes less effective as the body’s energy levels diminish.

Water also plays an important part in the process of digestion and elimination of toxins. Not drinking enough water is a one-way ticket to constipation and a host of other problems of the intestines. Poor digestion means that you will not get enough energy from the food you’re eating. This will prompt the body to ask for more food and this is how the weight loss process stops and the weight gain process begins. A dehydrated body sends out fake hunger pangs, thus tempting you to forget about the diet and eat more food than you should.  Thirst is often mistaken for hunger.

Not to mention that water is also a good filler. If you want to eat less food, drink a tall glass of water half an hour before every meal. The water will fill a large part of your stomach and the body will be content to feel that the stomach is not empty. This is not idle speculation, but a sound advice whose effectiveness can be confirmed by many dietitians and weight loss experts. Nobody can overeat with half of the stomach filled with water, your brain will signal to you: “Seems like we’re almost full. We don’t need that much food, so cut it short this evening”.

Keep in mind that in order to reap the benefits of drinking enough water, you will want to spread the intake throughout the day. Don’t drink 2 liters of water all at once because the body will simply flush the excess and a lot of it will simply be wasted. Also, you don’t need to restrict yourself to water. Fruit juices, tea and coffee count as liquids that can be used by the body for hydration, although fruit juice has lots of sugar and calories so it’s probably best not to overdo it. Alcohol is out of the question, because alcohol has the opposite effect on the body. Don’t be afraid that drinking a lot of water will make you retain fluid. It’s dehydration, not abundance, which forces the body to hang on to what it has.

If you find water a bit boring, add a squeeze of lemon juice to each glass – it helps cleanse your system.

Of course it’s preferable to drink filtered, purified water using a system like the Hexagon water filter.

Sugar Addiction – Is It Real?

Sugar does seem to be addictive.  It’s certainly very hard to give it up.

Your body learns fast that sugar means energy. A lot of energy running through the system translates into a good overall mood. Unfortunately, the good mood lasts just as long as the amount of sugar in your blood stays above a certain level. Once the amount of sugar drops below that particular level, the mood changes and the body starts craving the next sugar fix that will make everything feel good again. In this respect, sugar seems to operate just like any other psychoactive substance like adrenaline. Your body can get high on all these substances and will react adversely if it doesn’t get it’s fix – that’s an addiction.  An innocent addiction? Perhaps, but the swings can impact on your pancreas’ ability to produce insulin, increasing your risk of getting diabetes.

The Sugar Addicts’ Diet focuses on breaking the addiction to sugar in order to prevent the mood swings that prompt the addict to reach out for one more sugary treat. These mood swings are hard to resist and the promise of the next fix is so tempting that many people have no idea they’re hooked on something that is not healthy. Truth be known, most addicts don’t want to face reality and understand the truth about their addiction and many people hooked on sugar or adrenalin have absolutely no idea that they’re using a substance to prop up their moods.

This diet is largely based on the Glycemic Index approach because its purpose is to weed out the sugary foods and replace them with foods belonging to a lower Glycemic Index that release their sugar content slowly into the bloodstream and do not trigger the rush. The basic idea is to identify hidden sugar in the foods you eat. Many people don’t know that it’s not just sweets or soft drinks that contain sugar, but also a lot of sauces, dips, yogurts and ready-to-eat foods have enough sugar in them to cause the mood swings.

Processed foods have sugar disguised under various names, like:-

  • Glucose
  • Fructose
  • Dextrose
  • Lactose
  • Maltose
  • Sucrose
  • Any kind of syrup

It’s pretty easy to figure that this diet is more of a lifestyle choice than a proper diet. Of course you will lose weight by avoiding the foods rich in sugar, but we cannot be sure if this is the best way to go for a committed user. If you want to lose a certain number of pounds in a certain number of weeks, then you’re probably better off choosing another eating plan because nobody knows how fast you can lose weight under this one. Still, as a long-term maintenance solution, this eating plan is a good idea, especially for those who are used to eating a lot of sweets and are afraid that all those lost pounds will come back.

Probiotics and You

Healthy “Intestinal Flora” contributes to a healthy immune system and digestive system.

There is a war going on in your digestive tract. We all have good microbes (intestinal flora) residing within us, but there are bad ones as well. Disease-causing bugs in the intestine must compete with the “good” microbes.

What we need is an effective way to not only help keep the balance, but to actually let the good flora win. You need more good bacteria to allow your immune system, which is your body’s defense mechanism, to fight against the millions of bacteria you consume each day.

Stress and changes in diet can compromise your overall health. If your diet includes sugar and fatty meats then you are giving unfriendly flora in your digestive system the advantage. Of course some drugs, like antibiotics have a detrimental effect on your intestinal flora as they cannot distinguish between good bacteria and bad, so both die.

Probiotics support the immune system and enhances health by allowing the good intestinal flora to win. What are some examples of probiotics?

  • Bifidobacterium lactis: a friendly bacteria often found in yogurt that is known to help stimulate immune responses.
  • Lactobacillus casei: works with other helpful organisms, and helps to encourage the growth of other “good” bacteria.
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus: assists your elimination and occasional intestinal discomfort by working to stabilize your intestinal microflora.
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus: guards the health of your entire digestive tract.

Healthy digestive probiotics and the benefits they provide are all the rage now! The popularity of Probiotics is steadily increasing thanks to many high profile stars in Hollywood. Celebrities are now using Probiotics to give them the health benefits such as weight loss, anti-aging, energy boosts and much more. Probiotics is now becoming the supplement of choice amongst the celeb elite!

Early research shows Probiotics may also have a role in preventing colon cancer. It may produce natural antibiotics that kill destructive bacteria, strengthen the intestinal lining or simply just crowd out other, possibly harmful, bacteria.

Probiotics are vital for proper digestion of fats and proteins, synthesizing of vitamin K, vital for the prevention of osteoporosis and many of our B vitamins, plus they detoxify the intestinal tract and reduce cancer risks.

Eat more of the helpful bacteria, and you can stave off stomach problems. Research shows Probiotics significantly cuts the rate of many types of diarrhea, particularly the type that develops after a person has taken a course of antibiotics.

It’s Pure, White, Addictive and Deadly.

And just like heroin it’s extremely bad for your health.  What is It?  SUGAR!

We have fallen for the sugar deception – because sugar contains:-

  • no nutrition value

  • no fiber

  • no minerals

  • no vitamins

  • no enzymes

  • only empty calories.

So to metabolize sugar your body must borrow vital nutrients from it’s own stores. Over consumption of sugar also causes an acidic body, along with a list of health problems.

Constant surges of insulin from years of sugar consumption can exhaust your pancreas’ ability to produce insulin, increasing your risk of getting diabetes. Another condition, known as insulin resistance, may also develop, where your body becomes so accustomed to continuous insulin surges that the insulin loses its power to reduce blood sugar levels.

It’s not only diabetics who have to be concerned about sugar intake. Sugar can be totally devastating to your health for many reasons, including the following summary:-

  • Dampening your immune function
  • Making you fat
  • Causing yeast overgrowth
  • Causing chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Causing premature aging
  • Feeding cancer cells
  • Causing tooth decay
  • Causing hyperactivity in children
  • Increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease

Sugar addiction is real and it’s very hard to give up completely, some doctors liken sugar addition to heroin addition.

So what are the alternatives to sugar? Some are highly controversial. There are chemical based sugar substitutes which may have an unpleasant aftertaste and cannot be consumed by everyone (e.g. those with phenylketonuria).  Of course, I would not even think of recommending a chemical based product.

There is one I do recommend:-

ISOMALT – a natural product made from beet plants.  Isomalt is suitable for everyone, including diabetics, children, pregnant women.

Isomalt:-

  • Has half the calories of sugar (4g of sugar has 16kcal – Isomalt has 8kcal)
  • Has no strange aftertaste
  • Has a glycemic index (GI) of 2 (compared to sugars GI of 68)
  • Actually prevents tooth decay by reducing plaque formation
  • Functions as a prebiotic to promote friendly bacteria in the gut
  • Promotes healthy bowel movements
  • Actually reduces the risks of several types of cancer
  • Enhances the taste of food
  • Is suitable for use in baking at high temperatures
  • Helps extend the shelf life of baked goods

So why not do yourself a favor and replace sugar with Isomalt.

Dietary Fat – Is It Bad for You?

There are basic facts you should know about fats.

There are mainly two classes of fats; saturated fat, and unsaturated. The unsaturated ones are the polyunsaturated fats, and monounsaturated fats. Some fats are dangerous, while some are not. When fats come combined with proteins in the body, they form a complex called Lipoproteins. We will look at these later in a broader view to see why some are desirable and some are not, but first, let’s look at the major kinds of fats.

Saturated Fat

Fatty acids are made up of several chains of carbon atoms, it is said to be saturated because the carbon atoms have no free bonds to link with other atoms. Normally a carbon atom has 2 free bonds that are ready to attach with other atoms to form a compound. When these free bonds are used up entirely, usually by another carbon atom or a hydrogen atom, the fat becomes saturated. That is because there is no room for any more attachment.

These are the bad type of fat and the one we must avoid in trying to stay healthy. The body has a tough time processing saturated fats, because of the number of bonds it needs to break down in the process. Saturated fats raise cholesterol levels, which increases the chances of a heart attack. For a healthy dieting plan, saturated fats must be reduced significantly from the diet. Examples of sources of saturated fat are all forms of fat in animal flesh (meat), palm oil, and coconut oil etc.

However, it coconut oil is a bit different, while being a saturated fat it’s has medium chain triglicerides which may raise your metabolism and boost your immune system. Eating coconut oil will not increase your cholesterol levels. The saturated fat in coconut oil can actually help you lose weight. Coconut oil is ideal for cooking and baking as it does not oxidize during cooking (unlike most other vegetable oils). Coconut oil has high levels of lauric acid, an essential fatty acid best know as the main component of mothers milk.

Polyunsaturated Fat

Polyunsaturated fat comes in two types: omega 6 and omega 3. It is ‘poly’ because there are more than one unsaturated bonds in the compound. It is Omega-6 because the first unsaturated bond exists at the 6th carbon atom. Same is applicable to omega3. Omega 6 type comes mainly from vegetables, and omega 3 come from oily fish.  This type of fat is actually the healthy type and helps to reduce the level of cholesterol! So a small consumption is important for health. Remember, ‘small’.

Monounsaturated Fat

They have only one carbon atom carrying unsaturated bonds. They are derived mainly from vegetable and are found in olive oil and almond oil. They also have the ability to help reduce cholesterol levels.

Lipoproteins

They are fat-protein complexes and play important role in the development of heart attacks. They are two classes of these lipoproteins.
High Density Lipoproteins- These lipoproteins reduce the chance of a heart disease.
Low Density Lipoproteins- Increases the likelihood of heart diseases. If the level of LDL is higher than that of HDL, the likelihood of a heart disease, stroke diabetes etc. is increased and vice versa.

Your Daily Intake

Fats produces very high levels of energy and the daily intake shouldn’t exceed 30% of your total calories. In other words, for an average daily intake of 2,000 calories, only about 600 should be fat derived. This of course is if you are not trying to lose weight, but if you are; the calories in your daily fat consumption should be lower than 600 calories.

As a rule every 1g of fat equals 9 calories. That works out to about 66.7g of fat per day. But, remember,  for weight loss, it should go lower than that.  You can easily achieve this by cutting down on all fatty foods and eating more of vegetables and fruits, a little of pure carbohydrates. With little or no fat at all, you will soon be getting used to the low fat diet.

There is a way to easily reduce your fat intake – take a fat binding product.

Where’s My Focus?

I’ve realized a few things over the time I’ve written this blog.  While my original intention was to focus on natural superfoods and nutrition I now realize that people need help with their weight management and need access to healthy choices to help them achieve their goals.

So while my focus has changed slightly I’ll never give up my goal of providing information on nutrient dense superfoods and information on how anyone can improve their health and lifestyle through proper nutrition and detoxification, especially in view of the recent tragic loss of a friend from cancer.

Some of the wonderful natural weight management products are:-

AcaiBurn – With Both Acai and Green Tea

Super Food No. 12 – 12 great superfoods in one product

Caralluma Slim – Natural Appetite suppressant

Proactol – Fat Binder eliminates fat from your digestive system

Wu Yi Tea – Natural Fat burner and many other health benefits

SlimSmart – Boost metabolism and gain energy

I’m sorry that not all products are available outside the USA and Canada.  I’m always looking for products which have a broader availability.
