Chocolate

The higher the percentage of cocoa solids the more antioxidants are present – look for dark chocolate with over 70% cocoa solids.

Cleansing

I’m talking about elimination of bodily wastes here. If you can’t lose that lower tummy bulge then chances are that you’re carrying around at least some old fecal matter in your colon. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, include ground flaxseed meal (a great source of fiber, plus beneficial Omega -3 oils), take probiotics to assist in repopulating your intestinal flora, drink lots of pure water, periodically do a colon cleanse using a product with natural ingredients.

Colon

Part of your digestive system, where toxic wastes (including heavy metals like mercury and lead) can accumulate creating an encrusted layer on the walls of your colon which prevents proper absorption of nutrients and causes digestive upsets and illnesses. Eating lots of refined, low fiber foods contribute to a sluggish bowel. It is not uncommon for people to suffer from intestinal parasites, candida infections in the colon.

Concentration

Mental clarity and focus. Eat  lots of Brain Foods and other fresh fruits and vegetables plus drink plenty of pure water to aid your concentration.

“Health – A to Z” – B

“Health – A to Z” – The Letter B

Beta-Carotene

The natural orange color in fruits and vegetables, a sign of high antioxidants.

Boost

What you need to do to your immune system to ward off illness and disease.

Blueberries

High in antioxidants, phytoflavinoids, potassium and vitamin C. A delicious healthy berry to help lower your risk of heart disease and cancer. Also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Brain Food

Eat foods like salmon, rich in essential fats (your brain is more than 60% fat), include lecithin which contains phosphatidylcholine (PC).  PC is part of the actual membrane that surrounds the cell. Once PC is ingested in the body through lecithin-containing foods or supplements, it is broken down by the body into choline which is vital for the proper functioning of the brain.

Broccoli

Low in calories, high in health giving vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, including  the phytonutrients sulforaphane and the indoles, which have significant anti-cancer effects.

“Health – A to Z” – A

This is Part A of my new Information Series “Health – A to Z”.

I don’t focus on problems, I DO focus on solutions and information.  Feel free to join in the conversation and add your own comments and additions on each post under the relevant letter.

Absorption

We are not what we eat, we are what we absorb. Clogged colons prevent us from properly absorbing nutrients.

Acai Berry

The fruit of a palm tree found in the Amazon rainforest. High in antioxidant goodness.

Almonds

Contain healthy fats, vitamin E,  magnesium and potassium all of which are vital to a healthy life.  Eat a small handful between meals to get the goodness and stop eating junk food.

Anti Aging

We all want to slow down the aging process. Keeping our bodies properly nourished and hydrated is essential.

Anti Cancer

Many foods have natural anti cancer properties.  Choose fresh fruits and vegetables (lots of dark green leafy ones, and highly colored ones). Include garlic and other fresh herbs plus spices like turmeric and pepper.

Antioxidants

Naturally occurring substances which neutralize free radicals which cause damage to our cells. Many types abound in fresh fruits and vegetables – a good reason to have a varied diet.

10 Things You Need To Know To Lose Weight – Part 10

Part 10 – Be More Active

Move more. Even when at home, on the phone or anywhere do whatever you can to move more. Every little bit counts, so move anytime you get the opportunity or better still make your own opportunities.

Exercising

10 Things You Need To Know To Lose Weight – Part 9

Part 9 – Take Advantage of the “After Burn” from Moderate Exercise

The Medical Journalist in the BBC TV program hated exercise, but he was tested after exercising on a treadmill (at brisk walking pace).  The test showed he used up a small amount of body fat after the exercise, initially he was disappointed.

Exercise on treadmillThe next day the doctor assisting him showed him how his body had actually burned more fat while he slept and continued doing so well into the next day.

He called this effect “After Burn”. He said during exercise we burn carbohydrates and these take around 22 hours to replace, so we then burn fat reserves over the next 18 hours or so, even while sleeping.

So go and exercise and enjoy the after burn.

10 Things You Need To Know To Lose Weight – Part 8

Part 8 – High Calcium Dairy products Help Excrete Fat

This one is interesting as many people cut our dairy products when dieting.

Dairy Products

According to the science, compared to a low-calcium intake a high calcium intake increases the excretion of fat in the faeces. This means the more dairy calcium you include in your diet the less fat will be absorbed by the digestive system.

“a high calcium intake increases the excretion of fat in the faeces”

In our study we tested our group on both diets. Week one was a diet high in calcium (2000mg) and week two a low calcium diet (500mg). Crucially, both diets had an identical calorific content and were calculated to have the same fat content.

Amazingly on the high dairy calcium diet twice the percentage of fat our subjects ate came out in their stools to when they were on the low calcium diet.

SE Pendant Announcement

Is the SE Pendant safe?

“There has been some mention in the media in 2009 about the SE Pendant  (sold by eCosway) that may cause some concern among current users. This is an explanation on the situation with facts taken from the website of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The Company recalled the SE Pendant in Hong Kong as a response to the Hong Kong customs’ concern that the minerals thorium and uranium are present in amounts that exceed certain threshold levels that have been set by the authorities.

However, this does not inherently mean that the pendant is harmful. The action brought forth by the Hong Kong Customs is based on technicality and a difference in opinion on the safety level of certain natural occurring elements.

In Taiwan, in response to the news in Hong Kong, officers from Taiwan’s Atomic Energy Council (AEC) visited the Company’s Taichung warehouse last week to investigate the SE Pendant. According to the AEC officers present that day, the radiation emitted by the SE Pendant when checked with a handheld gadget, should not be harmful to health, and expressed surprise with the action brought on by the Hong Kong customs. In the 13th Sept Taiwanese newspaper, Apple Daily, it is clearly mentioned that according to the AEC, the Pendant is NOT radioactive although the reading is 2-3 times higher than the background reading. It is also mentioned that the content of Thorium and Uranium is within permissible levels. However, they are still awaiting the AEC’s confirmed laboratory testing before releasing its sales in Taiwan.

In Korea, where they are equally strict on quality control and safety issues, the SE Pendant which conforms to the standards specified by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), is permitted by the KFDA (Korean FDA) to be sold freely in Korea. If there was even the slightest suggestion that the SE Pendant may be harmful or poses a slightest ethical risk, KFDA would be scrutinizing its safety.

Although we (the Company) are confident that Malaysian findings will concur with Korean FDA and Taiwan AEC’s stand, where regulations may actually conflict, it is better to err on the side of caution. Hence, as a responsible company with a track record of over 30 years, eCosway have decided to stop the sales of the SE Pendant temporary in Malaysia until they can meet up with the Malaysian authorities.

We are currently having a new pendant manufactured that will conform to the existing regulations of all countries (and validated by laboratory test results). This pendant should be available in the next 2-3 months. They will be making the announcement in all sales centres once they are available. People will be able to exchange their existing pendants for these new ones if they prefer.

eCosway continues to believe that the SE Pendant is a great product with great benefits. So far, there are no evidence of any negative side effects ever occurring from a solid, natural form of volcanic material worn as a pendant. On the other hand, they have seen many positive studies, and have heard literally thousands of positive testimonials.

The SE Pendant is made from volcanic ash. As a natural material (like soil, rock and plants), this ash sometimes contains very small amounts of a naturally occurring radioactive minerals such as thorium and uranium. These “radioactive” minerals are naturally present in most rocks, soil, water, plants and animals and present no problems to health. Volcanic eruptions and coal burning can release these minerals into the air and when ingested or inhaled in large quantities, these minerals can be detrimental to health. This is generally what is being referred to when authorities set safety levels. The thorium and uranium present in the SE Pendant are naturally occurring (as they are in most stones) and are fused tightly in the solid form and therefore not likely to be ingested or inhaled.

10 Things You Need To Know To Lose Weight – Part 7

Part 7 – Variety – Friend or Foe?

It seems we are hardwired to prefer variety, if we see lots of choices we like to sample them all.  This can cause us to overeat – so beware the buffet restaurant – you’ll probably overeat by 30% or more.

Variety of foodsOf course variety in your diet is a good thing really, giving you access to a wide range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients, just remember the portion control and calorie count!

10 Things You Need To Know About Losing Weight – Part 6

Part 6 – Eat Healthy Soup

The BBC program used sophisticated equipment like an ultrasound to demonstrate how eating soup can make you feel fuller for longer, giving a longer period of satisfaction between meals.

They gave two groups of Army recruits the same meal consisting of rice, vegetables, chicken and a glass of water – the difference was that they turned the meal into soup for one group.

So the meals were

  1. A solid meal plus and glass of water
  2. A soup blended from all the ingredients

The on-the-spot ultrasounds showed how stomach’s of the group who ate the solid meal plus the water shrank quite rapidly while the stomach’s of the group who ate the soup retained its full volume for several hours.

What are the mechanisms affecting the body? The stomach has a valve called the pyloric sphincter at the bottom end – this hold food back until ytour digestive juices and get to work. However, water easily passes through the sphincter and doesn’t contribute to stomach fullness.

Your stomach has cells which produce a hormone called ghrelin. Grehlin (only discovered in 1999) is released by specialised cells in the stomach wall. The cell produce grehlin when your stomach is empty, the grehlin travels to your brain which understands the signal as “must eat food”.  When your stomach is full the production of grehlin ceases.

Vegetable SoupThe soup diet extends the stomach for longer, thus reducing your hunger for a longer period – as much as one and a half hours. I suppose those diet smoothies and shakes woud also work, provided they have sufficient thickness and volume.

Stroke Recogintion Tips

Stroke

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke… totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is the difficult part.

You may already know about the F-A- S- T indicators, meaning

F: FACE

  • Uneven smile
  • Facial droop/numbness
  • Vision disturbance

A: ARM & LEG

  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty walking

S: SPEECH

  • Slurred
  • Inappropriate words
  • Mute

T: TIME

  • Time is critical – call for immediate medical attention

In addition to these well-known signs there is another one, which is very helpful as sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S   Ask the individual to SMILE.
T   Ask the person to TALK and coherently REPEAT A  SIMPLE SENTENCE – (i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R  Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke is:  Stick out Your Tongue

Ask the person to ‘stick’ out his tongue.. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.

10 Things You Need To Know About Losing Weight – Part 5

Part 5 – Eat Lean Protein

Including lean protein into your meals satisfies your hunger for longer. You feel full longer and there eat less. Why? When we eat our digestive system produces a hormone called PYY which is released into the bloodstream. This hormone informs a part of our brain that we have eaten and reduces the feeling of hunger.

Steak grilling

It has been shown that lean protein causes more PYY to be produced therefore giving us a feeling of satisfaction for longer, so you hunger pangs are controlled.  Presumably the Atkins diet is based on this premise.

10 Things You Need To Know To Lose Weight – Part 3

Part 3 – Count Your Calorie Intake

Keep it simple. What do I mean? Take coffee for example, those fancy flavored cappuccinos have lots of things added, flavor, sugar, milk which all add to their calorie count – the worst I have seen is a Coffee, Mocha, White Chocolate, Skimmed, Whip, Tall from Starbucks with a whopping 344 calories, compared to approx. 10 in a black coffee.

Or take a simple slice of toast for around 125 calories compared to around 400-600 in a cinnamon bun.

Grilled chicken with salad comes in at around 250 calories, but the same meal with added cheese, croutons and creamy dressing is around 450 calories. When you add dressing you are really trying to add more flavor, so try adding a sprinkle of spices to your grilled chicken or add some very finely chopped red onion to your salad.

Feel like a snack? Try an apple or two (120 calories) rather than a bar of chocolate at 300.  Still need some chocolate?  Try Cacolamine!

How about pizza? Instead of the high calorie count in a meat and pepperoni pizza (1400+) try one with baby spinach, sweet potato, capsicum, artichokes , thinly sliced red onion or other vegetables of your choice instead. Another tip is to stick with the thin crust version or make your own using pre-packaged frozen puff pastry as the base (best made on a pre-heated pizza stone so it will crisp up) and add you choice of vegetables to a base with organic or homemade tomato sauce and a moderate quantity of grated cheese.

Overall, eating low calorie versions of your favorite foods could prevent you eating hundreds of unnecessary calories per day.

10 Things You Need to Kown to Lose Weight – Part 4

Part 4 – Don’t Blame Your Metabolism

Chances are you have a perfectly normal metabolism  – most of us do. It’s just that we love to blame something we feel is out of our control.

Even if you have a healthy diet you may be consuming too many calories due to excessive portion sizes – it’s very easy to do.

The BBC show discussed how we almost always under report our food consumption, even when we sincerely try to be honest. We just forget what we have eaten or fail to think about healthy tidbits or snacks or it might be those pesky portion sizes again.

10 Things You Need To Know To Lose Weight – Part 2

Part 2 – Use Smaller Plates

This is part 2 of a series of articles inspired by the BBC1 TV program hosted by Michael Mosely.

Using smaller plates seems an extremely simplistic idea. Surely our logic will override the visual? It seems not, the program detailed a study of the popcorn consumption of  people given full tubs of popcorn in 2 sizes (both sizes had more than enough popcorn to satisfy hunger) – people who had the larger size ate 30% more anyway – just because it was there.

I’ve found information saying that the average European dinner plate is 9-inch in diameter and the average US dinner plate is 11- inches – this means the 2-inch difference amounts to the 11-inch plate having 50% more surface area than the 9-inch plate. If, like most people, you fill your plate, you’re putting 50% more food on it than a person with the 9-inch plate.

Dinner platePortion control is important and a heaped small plate is just as appealing as a large one. This tip is very easy to implement. Over the years plate sizes have increased, leading us into trouble. Try comparing the plate sizes of an old dinner service with a modern one and see what you find.

So eat from smaller plates and eat fewer calories.

10 Things You Need To Know to Lose Weight – Part 1

Part 1 – Don’t Skip Meals

Recently the BBC produced a TV program with some interesting new insights into how to lose weight.  Their scientific approach helps us understand how our ingrained primitive instincts and natural bodily reactions affect our food choices and eating habits.

People think that skipping  a meal means simply because fewer calories are being consumed, weight loss will result.  Unless you literally starve yourself, nothing is further from the truth. Our brains are wired to respond to hunger by alerting us to EAT – at this time we naturally crave high-calorie foods. In the past this could have meant a hunter gatherer searched (getting exercise as they searched) for some sugary berries. Nowadays it probably means a quick trip to the pantry for some cookies or even worse a visit to the local chain of food-to-go for a high fat, high sugar, high calorie meal.

So, don’t fool yourself into thinking you can beat nature and skip meals.  Eat regular meals and keep those basic instincts under control.
