Stroke Recogintion Tips

Stroke

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke… totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is the difficult part.

You may already know about the F-A- S- T indicators, meaning

F: FACE

  • Uneven smile
  • Facial droop/numbness
  • Vision disturbance

A: ARM & LEG

  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty walking

S: SPEECH

  • Slurred
  • Inappropriate words
  • Mute

T: TIME

  • Time is critical – call for immediate medical attention

In addition to these well-known signs there is another one, which is very helpful as sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S   Ask the individual to SMILE.
T   Ask the person to TALK and coherently REPEAT A  SIMPLE SENTENCE – (i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R  Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke is:  Stick out Your Tongue

Ask the person to ‘stick’ out his tongue.. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.

Do You Consider Yourself To Be Healthy – Part 2

We would all love to be able to enjoy the benefits of having optimal health. It’s not really in question is it – it’s a fact.

Surely we all aim to:-

  • Have an abundance of energy all the time
  • be able to look younger than our years
  • be able to perform mentally, as when we were younger
  • be able to react as quickly as when we were young
  • have resilience to infections, even when most others get “the bug”
  • be able to enjoy quality sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed – oh what joy!

There is no “magic bullet” to achieving optimal health. There are things we need to do and not to do (at least to stop doing).

We need to stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol (well, maybe the odd glass of red wine is OK), stop any excessive lifestyle choices like eating fast foods and processed foods which contain lots of fats, sugars and preservatives, drinking sodas, taking drugs.

What we need to do is a longer list which I’ll continue in Part 3.

Do You Consider Yourself To Be Healthy? – Part 1

Because they don’t exhibit any particular symptoms of disease many people think they are healthy when in fact they are merely “surviving”. Are you living a life with optimal energy and health? In reality , over time, you may be “running down” your body by not properly replenishing it with the required nutrients.

How closely do you listen to your body? Do you have any of these symptoms?

  • Frequent headaches
  • Constant tiredness
  • General loss of energy and vitality
  • Insomnia, or inability to obtain quality sleep
  • Lack of enthusiasm for life, a “can’t be bothered” attitude
  • Poor memory and concentration
  • Lowered resistance to infections
  • Irregular bowel movements
  • Sagging and pigmented skin

These are some of the subtle symptoms that your body is not running at optimal performance.
