Harvesting Cranberries
Harvesting Cranberries

Researchers (including ones from Rutgers University in New Jersey and the University of Michigan ) have shown that cranberry offers protection against certain antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberry prevents UTI-causing bacteria from adhering to urinary tract walls so they can be flushed out with the urine stream before doing any damage.

Researchers have found that drinking three glasses of cranberry juice a day significantly raises the level of ‘good cholesterol’ in the blood and increase plasma antioxidant levels, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

With a potent formula consisting of no less than 35% organic acids, 9% quinic acid, anthocyanin, procyanidin and other nutrients, 2 chewable tablets are equivalent to the goodness of 100 grams of fresh cranberries.

Because cranberries can prevent bacteria from adhering to teeth, taking these tablets can promote good dental health and minimise dental plaque and dental caries (tooth decay). They literally cleanse your mouth as you chew!

The antioxidant power of cranberries enhances general health so your skin stays healthy and younger looking.Cranberries - ORAC Score

No Added Sugar!

Chewable tablets are tastier and healthier than ordinary cranberry drinks that are bitter-sour and/or high in calories.

Suitable for those who want to avoid high-sugar drinks or supplements. Great for everyone, including the elderly and children who are prone to urinary tract infections.

Cranberry – Tiny Fruit With Huge Health Benefits

Cranberries are perhaps best known for their effects on urinary tract health.

Cranberry
Cranberry

However, recent research indicates that these tiny berries are also great for your tummy, skin, gums and teeth because they are packed with powerful antioxidants and organic acids, including ellagic acid, citric acid, malic acid, quinic acid, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, and vitamin C. Several studies have shown that cranberries may even play an important role in reducing cardiovascular risk and preventing cancer.

Cranberries for Preventing Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

UTIs are usually caused by E. coli, a type of bacteria that is normally found in the digestive tract. They can also be found on the skin around the rectum, and may even make their way up into the bladder. Although UTIs are often associated with women, men and children can suffer from UTIs too. Symptoms of UTIs include an urgent desire to empty the bladder, frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, the feeling of having to urinate(even though little or no urine actually comes out), lower abdominal pain, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. If left untreated, bacteria can travel up to and infect the kidneys, causing serious complications.

Due to the fact that strong antibiotics can irritate the stomach and kill off the friendly bacteria in the gut (and that more E. coli strains are becoming resistant to them), antibiotics are no longer the best solution for UTIs. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), cranberries can offer great protection and relief from UTIs — including the ones that are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Studies show that cranberries contain A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs) which are more effective in inhibiting the adhesion of E. coli to the urinary tract epithelium than the B-type proanthocyanidins found in other sources. When E. coli bacteria are unable to stick to the urinary tract walls, they are unable to cause any mischief. The beneficial effects start within two hours after intake and can last up to 10 hours in the urine.

Other Benefits of Cranberry

Improves gastric ulcers

Helicobacter pylori infects up to 60% of the world’s population, causing gastric and duodenal ulcers and increasing the risk of gastric cancer. Although there may not be any obvious symptoms until a gastric ulcer has reached an advanced stage, some of the earlier symptoms include bloating, frequent burping, nausea, change in appetite, or a burning pain in the stomach. Helicobacter pylori is transmitted through saliva, so sharing food or eating out may pose a risk if the food or eating utensils are contaminated. Fortunately, studies show that cranberries can effectively stop Helicobacter pylori bacteria from attaching to the stomach crevices that can protect them from stomach acids. When exposed to stomach acids, the bacteria are destroyed, flushed out and expelled from the gastrointestinal tract.

Encourages healthy gums & teeth, & keeps breath fresh

Cranberries prevent bacteria from sticking to the teeth, keeping teeth cleaner longer. This helps to prevent the formation of plaque, tooth decay and bleeding gums. Cranberries have the power to crush offensive-smelling bacteria that can build up in the mouth and lead to bad breath.

Encourages healthy heart & reduces stroke damage

Cranberries contain significantly high amounts of flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds that help prevent the oxidation of LDL (‘bad cholesterol’). This reduces the risk of plaque formation that would otherwise restrict blood flow. Studies, including one by the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, concluded that cranberries may reduce the brain cell damage associated with stroke. These findings suggest that cranberries can reduce the severity of stroke, and aid in recovery, particularly during the earliest stages, when the most severe damage occurs.

Reduces the risk of kidney stones

The quinic acid in cranberries reduces ionised calcium, thus, reducing the risk of kidney stone formation, even among those prone to recurring kidney stones.

Promotes a fairer & more youthful-looking complexion

Free radicals destroy collagen in the skin, causing wrinkles and sagging skin. They can also cause skin to appear dull, red or inflamed. Cranberries have a very high ORAC value (which means that they have potent antioxidant capabilities and can effectively quench free radicals for fairer, more youthful skin)

Alleviates gout

Cranberries help to eliminate uric acid that could otherwise crystallise around the joints and cause the painful symptoms of gout.

Improves anaemia & relieves tiredness

Cranberries are naturally rich in vitamin C and aid the absorption of iron, which is crucial for the red blood cells in the body. Without sufficient iron, one can feel persistently tired, due to a lack of oxygen caused by low haemoglobin levels.

Tea – Secrets of The Orient

Green Tea
Tea Plantation

Oriental and Indian cultures have known about the benefits of tea for thousands of years. The rest of the world is slowing catching up and being educated on the immense variety of healthy teas available.

The color of tea is usually dependent on the amount of post-harvesting processing.

White Teas – are the least processed and are not fermented. White tea is gaining in popularity as its significant health benefits become more widely recognized. White tea, as recent research has demonstrated, has the highest cancer fighting antioxidant polyphenols and has significantly lower caffeine content than black tea or green tea.

White tea can be considered a specialty tea due to its higher price, with some connoisseur blends of hand-picked limited-harvest white tea, grown in China, costing hundreds of dollars a pound.

Care needs to be taken when brewing white tea. Its delicate nature dictates for the best results, purified water at below boiling point should be used. Water which is too hot can result in a bitter tea, something you certainly want to avoid when you have paid for an expensive tea. White tea can be steeped for up to ten minutes, depending on your individual preference.

Green Teas – produced in China, Japan and Taiwan, are not fermented, low in caffeine and are well-known for health benefits, like boosting your immune system, reducing high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Like white tea, green tea contains antioxidants, flavonoids, catechins vitamins C and E, and natural fluoride which protects against tooth decay.

For best results, green tea should be brewed with purified water, which is below boiling point. To avoid bitterness, do not infuse for longer than 1-2 minutes for fine leaf varieties, or 2-3 minutes for larger leaf varieties.

Black teas – are fully fermented teas and are the most commonly consumed. Hundreds of named varieties are available. Black tea is produced in large quantities in China, India, Sri Lanka, with smaller amounts coming from Australia, Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal and New Guinea. Specialty black teas are vastly different to the average tea bag, each having its own distinct color and taste.
Black teas also provide health benefits similar to green tea.

Oolong tea – combines the best qualities of both green and black teas. Semi-fermented, producing a refreshing, fragrant result. Adding milk is not recommended.

Wu-Yi Tea is a special Oolong tea well known for its weight loss properties. The raw leaves are sun-wilted and then bruised, which exposes their juices to the air, this causes the leaves to oxidize and start to turn brown like a cut fruit. They are only partially oxidized, giving them a rich, floral flavor. The tea is then fully dried which locks in the rich flavors that oolong tea is known to offer. The unique drying process that takes place in the creation of a tea that has many metabolic stimulating attributes. Find out more about Wu-Yi Tea HERE.

Jasmine tea – a non-fermented Chinese tea well known for its affinity with Asian food. Do not add milk.

Specialty flavored teas – a huge range of tea varieties blended with natural ingredients to add flavor. Additional ingredients can include:-
Spices – like anise, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, fennel and black peppercorns.
Fruits – like apricot, cherry, apple, orange, blackcurrant, strawberry, lemon, lime, lychee, mango, raspberry and passionfruit.
Flowers – like hibiscus, lavender, rose, cornflower, calendula, and jasmine.
Nuts – like almond.
Other exotic ingredients like ginger, chocolate, mint, caramel, coconut, vanilla beans, bergamot and ginseng.
Specialty teas are consumed without milk.

Herbal teas – also known as herbal infusions – do not usually contain white, green or black teas, they consist of a variety of blends of herbs, spices and fruits chosen for particular health benefits. Herbal teas are usually named after the benefit they are promoting, e.g., “Recovery” blend for hangovers.

Ayurvedic teas – similar to herbal teas, but, based on ancient Indian healing principles, Ayurvedic teas aim to improve your life and extend your longevity.

Teas are a low calorie beverage choice (especially when no milk, sugar or honey is used), adding to your daily intake of water. Teas should be purchased as loose leaf teas, never teabags. Lemon juice can be added as a taste preference. Most teas can also be iced for a summer treat.

* Diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer and other chronic diseases.

“For optimum health, scientists say, eat a rainbow of colors. Your plate should look like a box of Crayolas.”
– Janice M. Horowitz, TIME, January 12, 2002

Colorful fruits and vegetables provide the wide range of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals your body uses to maintain good health and energy levels, protect against the effects of aging, and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.*

Many of the phytochemicals and other compounds that make fruits and vegetables good for us also give them their color. That’s why it’s essential to sample the complete color spectrum every day to get the full preventive benefits of fruits and vegetables.

But how many of us actually accomplish this? The cost of fruit and vegetables is soaring making it even more difficult. Plus there is the often misunderstood issue of lack of digestive enzymes. These enzymes provide you with ability to assimilate the nutrients in your food.

There is an easier way to consume your 5 a day, plus enzymes – Click HERE to find out how.

Your Personal Firewall Against An Acidic Body – Part 5 – Regulate Your Body

Regulate Your Body pH To Restore & Maintain Prime Health

A healthy person’s blood pH level should be slightly alkaline (in the range of pH 7.35 – pH 7.45). However, most people today have an acidic blood level due to pollution, poor eating habits, stress and lack of exercise. This acidity adds to the stress of the organs involved in blood circulation and cleansing, such as the liver, heart, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, etc. As a result of this stress, many organs start to deteriorate, which may lead to health conditions, diseases and ailments such as fatigue, body aches and cardiovascular diseases that could develop into chronic diseases or even cancer.

An acidic body is primarily caused by a diet high in meat or refined carbohydrates. The lack of dietary fibre leads to the accumulation of animal fats, resulting in hardening of the blood vessels and stress on the organs. Once weakened, the body is susceptible to disease.

The Crucial Influence of pH Level on Health

The advantages of blood alkalinity

Blood that is slightly alkaline flows much smoother in the body. This efficient circulation allows greater amount of oxygen and nutrients to be transported and absorbed by the body. This helps to raise the metabolic rate, increase cell vitality, and improve overall energy. Slightly alkaline blood not only prevents arteries from hardening, but also reduces the amount of deposited fat on the arterial walls. This free blood flow helps reduce the potential for and symptoms of many cardiovascular diseases.

Slight alkalinity is a sign of good health; it indicates that the body’s immune system i.e. natural resistance and healing capacity, is in good condition, and able to resist the onset of many diseases.

The disadvantages of body acidity

Acidic blood has a higher viscosity. This prevents smooth blood flow, leading to poor oxygen transfer. The poor flow rate also leads to the hardening of blood vessels.

Cholesterol, adipose tissue, triglycerides, and other harmful compounds tend to accumulate on the cell wall when the blood is acidic. This can result in atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries) and can accelerate hardening of the blood vessels, or lead to the accumulation of toxins in the body which can cause chronic disease.

Are you plagued by an acidic body?

Answer the following questions to find out for yourself!

If you have 5 or more of the listed symptoms, then there is a high chance that your body is acidic.

Move or perform tasks at a very slow pace. (You have the will but not the strength to perform tasks.)
Feel sleepy when you ride in a car or drive
Feel tired after mild exercise. Short of breath (panting) when walking up or down the stairs
Suffer from poor memory and concentration
Experience coldness in the limbs
Bruise easily, experience frequent skin breakouts, or bleeding gums
Prone to eczema
Have dull complexion or acne
Suffer from athlete’s foot
Tend to suffer infections (pus) on wounds
Suffer a protruding abdomen even though overall average in size.
Easily put on weight / Difficulty controlling body weight
Suffer from constipation or frequent diarrhoea
Have bad breath
Frequently suffer from tinnitus
Frequently feel dizzy, feeling very tired especially in the afternoons
Have weak immune system; prone to flu and fever
Frequently bitten by mosquitoes / insects

Lifestyle and diet

If you check 5 or more boxes, your lifestyle and diet could be contributing to an acidic body.

Frequent all-nighters or late nights (sleep after 1am)
Frequently eat supper, or have dinner after 8pm
Frequently skip breakfast
Smoke
Drink alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, whisky, etc.)
Drink more than 3 cups of coffee daily
Drink carbonated beverages daily
Frequently consume meat
Eat very little fruits and vegetables
Drink less than 2000ml of water each day, or drink water that is acidic (distilled water, RO water)
Like to eat processed food, fried food or sweet snacks
Lack physical exercise
Live or work under constant pressure , and usually find it difficult to de-stress
Constantly in a polluted environment (surrounded by second hand cigarette smoke, waste gas from factories, etc.)

Do not be “ambushed” by acid

Humans are born with a body that is slightly alkaline, but on average, our bodies tend to become acidic after the age of 25. This is due to ageing, environmental and food pollution, poor diet, stress, unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle, overworking, etc. Acidity can be the cause of many diseases because it impedes normal enzyme functions. In a study carried out by the University of Tokyo, up to 90% out of the 600 cancer patients surveyed have an acidic body, of which, 85% have pH levels of 5.8 and below. “Immune cells” are adversely affected by acidity and may succumb to cellular poisoning or death if exposed to it for prolonged periods. With the immune cells severely depleted or damaged, virus and other disease-causing agents can wreak havoc in the body. Approximately 40 million members of Japan’s various “golden years” clubs are actively promoting vinegar as one of the best products for reducing fatigue, and returning the body to its normal alkaline pH level. These Japanese in their golden years drink large amounts of “vinegar” during meals to improve overall bodily functions and revitalise the organs. It is no coincidence that the Japanese have the highest human life expectancy in the world!

The best way to overcome an acidic body is to consume more alkaline food and beverages.

Alkaline food

Most vegetables, garlic, mushrooms, onion, wheatgrass, etc.
Algae: chlorophyta, spirulina, seaweed, etc.
Most fruits: apple, banana, lemon, grape, orange, watermelon, pineapple, Japanese plum, strawberry, etc.
Sprouts like alfalfa…

Acidic food

Almost all meat products: beef, chicken, pork, duck
Almost all seafood: fish, oyster, prawns, etc.
Most grains & beans: flour, bread, corn, plain rice, noodles, pasta, biscuit, wheat, barley, etc.
Dairy products: butter, milk, cheese, cake, etc.
Almost all oil and fats, including corn oil and olive oil
Others: coffee, carbonated drinks, refined sugar, alcoholic drinks, medicine, food tainted with pesticides and insecticides, canned or pickled foods

Nutrition Intelligence – Glossary – Antioxidants, Vitamins, Phytochemicals

Glossary of Terms you may find useful. Got something you can add? Just post a comment with the details.

A

Antioxidants Group of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phyto-nutrients, phyto-chemicals) which help protect your body from free radicals (caused by normal body functions, aging, pollutants, pesticides, antibiotic use and other factors).

Adaptogen – That which helps boost, balance and normalize functions in your body.

B

Bioflavanoids – Sometimes referred to as Vitamin P, these help to enhance the absorption of Vitamin C. The human body does not produce these so they must be supplied by your diet. They help to promote circulation, stimulate bile production, and act with Vitamin C to preserve and protect the structure of capillary blood vessels.

D

Demulcent – Helps to soothe and relieve internal inflammation.

E

Emollient – Helps to soothe and soften inflamed tissue

F

Free Radicals – A single or group of unstable molecules/atoms that can cause damage to cells, leading to breakdown and disease. Visualize and apple – when you cut it and leave the cut surface exposed to air.It turns brown, almost like it’s rusting. Oxidization has occurred. In a similar way unstable oxygen molecules in your body are the free radicals that cause your unprotected organs to “rust” and breakdown.

P

Phytochemicals – Literally meaning “plant chemicals”, phytochemicals are protective food factors derived from a variety of plant sources. Phtyochemicals have powerful health benefits. Whenever there is plant life, phytochemicals protect plants from attack by their enemies in the environment, like bacteria, viruses, radiation and insects. Research is now showing that we can benefit from these life-sustaining qualities as well. Good news for us. Plants have been in existence much longer than man and know much more about survival. Research indicates that phytochemicals can provide protection against some types of cancer.

T

Tonic – A product that is strengthening and invigorating.

V

Vitamins really deserve there own glossary! Vitamins are organic chemicals that are necessary for growth, metabolism, and overall health and well-being. Vitamins originate in food, and are categorized as either fat soluble (meaning they can be stored in the body for long periods of time) OR water soluble (these pass easily through our bodies, cannot be stored, must be replenished daily).

Vitamin A – Also known as Beta Carotene, a fat-soluble vitamin essential for cell growth, development, reproduction, and immunity. It is stored primarily in the liver and is considered one of the most potent antioxidants.

Vitamin B1 – Also known as Thiamine, a water-soluble vitamin, beneficial to the nervous system. It helps to convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy.

Vitamin B2 – Also known as Riboflavin, a water-soluble vitamin which helps with energy production. It must be replaced constantly. It is the most common deficiency.

Vitamin B3 – Also known as Niacin, a water-soluble vitamin, a major player against heart disease. It helps to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Vitamin B6 – Also known as Pyridoxine, this water-soluble vitamin goes through the body in only 8 hours. It is needed for red-blood cell production and cellular growth. It also plays a key role in the immune system and antibody production.

Vitamin B12 – Also known as Cyanocobalamin, a water-soluble vitamin known for its energizing capabilities. It is essential for nerve tissue, promotes growth, memory and regenerates red blood cells.

Vitamin B15 – Also known as Pantothenic Acid, this water-soluble vitamin helps protect against cardiovascular disease as ell as helping with symptoms of arthritis. It helps encourage healing, protects the liver and immune system.

Biotin -This water-soluble vitamin is essential for the metabolism of vitamin C, fat and protein. It helps with healthy hair, skin and nails.

Vitamin C – This water-soluble vitamin is essential for formation of collagen (exists between cells to hold tissue together). It is necessary for growth and integrity of bones, blood vessels, teeth and gums. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and has many powerful properties; anti-cancer, prevention of blood clots.

Vitamin D – This is a fat-soluble vitamin that the skin can produce on its own when exposed to direct sunlight. In only 15 minutes a day, your body can manufacture all it needs. It is not very abundant in food, and is stored in the liver for future use.

Vitamin E – This fat-soluble vitamin is stored in many places; the heart, liver, reproductive organs, fatty tissue, and muscles. It basically works for the nervous system. It is a potent antioxidant, and helps to combat heart disease, by keeping good cholesterol (HDL) high, blood thin and blood pressure low.

Nutrition Intelligence – The Truth About Your Colon (Fiber & You) – Part 8

It’s not something we talk about. Generally we don’t even want to think about what’s going on inside there. Unless we have a problem. Even then we find it embarrassing.

Recognizing your colon as a major organ which affects the way you feel every day is a step towards improving your life.

Your Colon

The old saying is “death begins in the colon” is literally true. However, I recommend you turn this into a more positive “health begins in the colon”.

Our colon’s function is to act as your body’s sewage system. Effectively eliminating dangerous toxins. Problems occur when this process becomes inefficient, then retained waste leads to re-absorption of toxins into your bloodstream.

Are laxatives the answer? Absolutely not. These may seem like an easy fix. They are not. You can become dependent on them, and over time your colon’s normal ability to naturally eliminate waste will be permanently destroyed. Laxatives should be considered only a very temporary solution to a specific problem.

What your body needs is fiber (or fibre depending on where on the plant you live). Fiber is a safe and natural way of enhancing your body’s ability to rid itself of wastes and toxins.

Fiber acts as:-

  • A Bulking agent – fiber absorbs water in your digestive tract, bulking out the waste matter and allowing it to pass through more easily. This reduces the transit time, therefore reducing your exposure to toxins in the waste. Think of a sponge soaking up the toxins. Studies have confirmed a link between having enough fiber in your diet and a lower risk of colorectal cancer.
  • A Cleansing agent – fiber helps to cleanse the colon by gently sweeping the colon clean of compacted, putrefying, waste materials and helping to eliminate excess cholesterol and dietary toxins. Think of a brush physically cleaning your colon.
  • Fiber also helps normalize blood sugar levels.

The aim of the game is cleansing, detoxifying and improving transit time.

The issue with our modern diet is that it is severely low on fiber. Processed food, refined carbohydrates like bread, biscuits, pastas, soft drinks and polished rice are almost devoid of fiber and nutrients.

As a consequence we suffer conditions like:-

  • constipation
  • hemorrhoids
  • varicose veins
  • headaches
  • digestive problems
  • fatigue/chronic tiredness
  • aches and pains
  • insulin resistance, and eventually diabetes
  • increased risk of cancer

Where can you get high quality fiber? Eat a diet which includes high fiber fresh fruits and vegetables. Supplement your diet with high fiber.

What’s the Big Deal About Lecithin? – Part 5 – For Healthy Organs

For Healthy Heart and Cholesterol Levels

Lecithin has lipotropic properties, which means it is able to break down cholesterol plaques deposited on arterial walls. This means it improves vessel elasticity and blood circulation. It also helps raise GOOD cholesterol (HDL – High-density lipoprotein) while lowering BAD cholesterol (LDL – low-density lipoprotein) and triglicerides.

Lecithin also shields against the damaging effects of homocysteine, an amino acid that may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease.

For Healthy Liver

Lecithin is important to ensure a healthy liver function. It is the main component of the liver, making up 73% of the total liver fat. Lecithin is able to protect the liver against degenerative changes brought on by fatty foods, alcohol and drugs.

Lecithin’s fat-dissolving ability also helps prevent the formation of gallstones. Gallstone problems are common in people aged over 40. Most people with gallstones doe not experience any symptoms for long periods, if the stones remain in the gallbladder. Pain in the right upper part of of the abdomen that occurs after eating fatty foods may be indicative of gallstones. Other common symptoms of gallstones include belching, bloating, nausea and feeling of fullness after an oily meal.

For Young Healthy Skin

Lecithin is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and is able to help reduce various skin problems, such as eczema. By combating dryness, it helps to restore your skin’s youthful freshness. It also reduces unslightly yellow fatty deposits, which often develop under the skin around the eyes.

All this means that you should include lecithin as part of your diet, irrespective of your age, for a healthy heart, liver and glowing skin.
