Think about breathing…
Our cities are so polluted we can actually see what we’re breathing – not a good thing. Since it’s not possible to avoid airborne pollution the best you can do is to be aware of it and minimise your exposure. When in your car recycle the internal air to avoid breathing exhaust fumes from the traffic outside.
If you look under your kitchen sink I’m sure you’ll find chemical sprays of some kind. Glass cleaner, oven cleaner, bench sprays, insect sprays. Be aware and buy the “friendliest” products you can find and exercise caution when using them. Never inhale the “over-drift” of household sprays or get them on your skin.
Use friendly alternatives like steam cleaning, as it simply uses water. Microfiber cloths which “grab” onto dirt are very useful. Dedicate separate colored cloths for bathrooms and kitchens to prevent cross contamination.
Got weeds? Don’t automatically reach for the pesticide spray. You may kill more than the weeds. Try removing them by hand or using the right garden tools to pull them out. Use a mulch to thickly cover the bare soil in your garden to prevent weeds and retain water. Remove any dead foliage to minimize any fungal growth. Got bugs in your vegetable patch? If you have used spray in the past you may have upset your garden’s natural balance. Time is needed to restore it. Use physical barriers like netting and mesh to keep bugs off fruit.
Got spiders and other bugs inside your home? No need to spray! Get screens for your doors and windows. Use your vacuum cleaner hose to suck up spiders and their webs and other bugs inside your home.
Other Household Pollution
Paint, carpets, furniture and other furnishing and building materials all produce “off gases” which cause indoor pollution. Don’t forget dust. Dust is mostly dead skin cells and can be a source of viruses and bacteria. This type of pollution can be counteracted by proper ventilation and air purifiers.
Any mould in your home is a serious, even dangerous, pollutant. Any leaks or overflows must be attended to immediately and the area dried out quickly. Kill existing mould with great smelling natural methods like tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil or citrus oil. Proper ventilation is a must to prevent mould growth. Exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens are a simple way to remove moist air. Leave them on for at least 10 minutes after a shower. If you live in a warm humid area use ceiling fans to get air moving and ceiling vents to draw air though rooms. It’s cooling too.
What can I say? If you don’t know by now that smoking is extremely bad for your health you must have been living in a cave. Simply don’t smoke and avoid breathing “secondhand” smoke.
