Good Nutrition. Is It Enough?

Healthy eating is just the first step to a healthy life…

Even eating the right foods can be wrong if your portion sizes are too large, so that’s something to be aware about.

We are complicated beings with a complex digestive process. If you’ve ever suffered from acid reflux, bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation or irritable bowel syndrome you’ll understand what can go wrong!

So Step 1 is having a good diet. Eating the right foods in the right portions.

Step 2 is your digestive system.

Step 3 is properly absorbing the nutrients from your food and getting them into your cells.

Step 4 is the elimination of waste in timely manner.

One group of almost unknown elements, digestive enzymes,  impacts every part of our digestive system. View the video below to see more about enzymes.

Is Your Digestive System Killing You?

The expression “Death Begins in the Colon” may or may not be accurate, but few will argue that a poorly functioning digestive system can make you feel ill.

Digestion actually begins when our senses react to the look and smell of food. Ever had a “mouth watering” response to looking at food, or smelling it?  Saliva is activated, getting us ready to digest our food.

The next step is chewing – Chewing is an important step in the digestive process, breaking down food into particles our systems can handle. We are frequently “eating on the run”and not chewing our food properly, which hampers your digestion.

Food then passes down through your esophagus on it’s way to your stomach – rhythmic muscle movements called peristalsis aid the transition from your mouth to your stomach.

Your stomach is a flexible sack-like organ which churns food and produces digestive acids to further the digestive process. It’s essential to know that Nature expected us to get digestive enzymes from our food to help this process, though for a variety of factors (like eating cooked food) it’s difficult for us to get enough of these enzymes. Read more about enzymes and download our free enzyme information booklet.

In the next part of it’s journey your food enters enters the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, followed by the jejunum and the ileum (the final part of the small intestine). In the small intestine, bile (produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder), pancreatic enzymes, and other naturally produced digestive enzymes produced by the inner wall of the small intestine further assist in the breakdown of food.

Your Colon
Your Colon

The next step is the large intestine where some of the water and electrolytes (chemicals like sodium) are removed from the food. Many microbes (like good bacteria and probiotics) in the large intestine help in the digestion process. The first part of the large intestine is called the cecum (the where your appendix is connected). then travels upward in the ascending colon. The food travels across the abdomen in the transverse colon, goes back down the other side of the body in the descending colon, and then into the sigmoid colon.

At the end of this long, complicated journey wastes are excreted via the anus.

So you can understand how this long process may be compromised by bad eating habits, lack of proper hydration, lack of enzymes, lack of probiotics and build-up of toxic matter in your colon.

Colotrim – All Natural Ingredients

Colotrim contains a special blend of these powerful all-natural ingredients:

Goldenseal is a powerful natural disinfectant that helps kill harmful bacteria and unwanted parasite.

x Goldenseal is a cure-all type of herb that strengthens the immune system, acts as an antibiotic, has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, potentiates insulin, and cleanses vital organs. It promotes the functioning capacity of the heart, the lymphatic and respiratory system, the liver, the spleen, the pancreas, and the colon.

Taken internally, Goldenseal increases digestive secretions, astringes the mucous membranes that line the gut, and checks inflammation. It also aids digestion by promoting the production of saliva, bile, and other digestive enzymes. In addition it may control heavy menstrual and postpartum bleeding by means of its astringent action.

Buckthorne root assists in healthy stool formation.

x Buckthorne root aids liver congestion, helps to carry blood and liver toxins out of the body. Good for gall stones, and lead poisoning. Calms the gastro-intestinal tract, is amild laxative, good for chronic constipation, and keeps the bowels regulated. Relieves dropsy (excess fluid accommodation in tissues or body cavity). Used for hemorrhoids, colic (abdominal pain caused by spasm), obesity, acute appendicitis, ulcerative colitis (inflammation of the colon).

Pumpkin seed provides excellent assistance to help sweep out waste as it moves through the colon.

x Pumpkin seeds are one of nature’s almost perfect foods. They are a natural source of beneficial constituents such as carbohydrates, amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids. They contain most of the B vitamins, along with C, D, E, and K. They also have the minerals calcium, potassium, niacin, and phosphorous. Pumpkin seeds have mainly been used to treat prostate and bladder problems, but they have also been known to help with depression and learning disabilities.

Licorice root provides assistance in soothing gastrointestinal irritations and inflammations.

x Licorice was used historically to treat the skin and coughs. It is also used to treat constipation, bronchitis, inflammation, and arthritis. Licorice may be prescribed by health care providers to treat adrenocortical insufficiency, peptic ulcer, and chronic gastritis.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses licorice to treat problems from tuberculosis to diabetes. Restrained production of cortisol and anti-inflammatory effects are caused by the flavonoids and glycyrrhizin in licorice. Research has shown that licorice flavonoids can kill the bacteria that causes stomach inflammation and ulcers, called Helicobacter pylori.

Ginger root helps to relieve weak digestion and malabsorption.

x Ginger Root has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years and is known to be greatly beneficial in reducing nausea and upset stomachs. It was used in Greek culture for making breads, the forerunner of the delicious gingerbread we enjoy today.

The plant is native to Southeast Asia, however due to the many benefits of Ginger Root, today it is cultivated around the world in many diverse locations.

Fennel seed is used to promote healthy digestion and support a healthy appetite.

x Fennel seeds often provide quick and effective relief from many digestive disorders. They help to overcome gas, cramps, acid indigestion, and many other digestive tract maladies.

These seeds are very rich in minerals including magnesium. Two of its main constituents are Anethol and Fenchone. Anethol and other terpenoids may inhibit spasms in smooth muscles such as those in the intestinal tract. Fenchone may be responsible for the medicinal properties associated with Fennel.

Recent studies have found that consumption of fennel can increase the production of bile and may also possess diuretic, pain-reducing and anti-microbial activities.

Cascara Sagrada is used to promote movement in the colon and alleviate constipation.

x Cascara sagrada has a long history of traditional use by native americans. Cascara sagrada contains compounds called anthroquinones, which are responsible for cascara’s powerful laxative effects. Anthraquinones trigger contractions in the colon, called peristalsis, which causes the urge to have a bowel movement. Today, it is one of the most common herbal laxatives.

In addition to being a powerful laxative, cascara is also believed to improve the muscle tone of the colon walls.

Rhubarb is a natural Laxative that promotes healthy digestion.

x It is recognized that rhubarb not only exercises a digestive action but it operates directly as a conveyer of bile salts. When it reaches the stomach its digestive effects come into full play, causing an increase of the flow of gastric juice and inducing their movement, thus favoring the processing of the contents of the stomach. Besides stimulating the secretions from the liver which convey the bile salts, it assists the intestine in regulating the absorption of fats.

Rhubarb is used as a laxative, antiphlogistic, and homeostatic in the treatment of constipation, diarrhea, jaundice, gastro-intestinal hemorrhage, menstrual disorders, conjunctivitis, traumatic injuries, superficial suppurative sores and ulcers.

Nutrition Intelligence – Are You Really What You Eat? – Part 6

The saying goes “You are what you eat”. Is this true? NO. Why not? You are only what you can digest and absorb.

What does that mean? The food we eat is made out of large complex molecules which can’t possibly enter our bloodstream and cells. Therefore they must be broken down into much smaller units before your body can use it. This process is done by digestive enzymes.

An abundance of digestive enzymes is needed to assist in digestion, assimilation and utilization of the nutrients found in food and in the elimination of waste.

Enzymes in food are destroyed by heating, processing, freezing, preservatives and other chemical additives. As you age your natural supply of enzymes is depleted. Stress also contributes to enzyme depletion. So supplementing your diet with enzymes is important to allow proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.

What are the consequences of a shortage of enzymes? Well, believe it or not you can become overweight. One of the major causes of obesity is poor nutrition. When absorption is poor your simply don’t get the nutrients you need. Your body’s deep, silent hunger for healthier nutrition is expressed as a desire for more food. Craving for food when you have already eaten sufficient is an indication of your body crying out for nourishment. If you mistakenly eat low nutrient, high calorie food your body will continue to crave for nutrients, while storing the excess calories as fat. One way of curbing cravings is supplementing your diet with digestive enzymes.

Food allergies are often the result of poor digestion. When food is not completely digested, larger than normal food particles are absorbed into the circulation. When these incompletely digested pieces of food molecules enter the blood stream, they are recognized by the immune system as foreign. When the immune system launches an attack, your body experiences a food related allergic reaction.

Bio N-Zymes are an effective way to get the digestive enzymes you need. CLICK HERE to find out more about them.

Do You Consider Yourself To Be Healthy – Part 3

Along with eliminating those bad habits referred to in Part 2 of this series, we must change what we are doing and eating.

Unfortunately, it’s simply not enough to stop the bad stuff, we have to intake lots of the good stuff. We have a lot to overcome, to have average health, let alone optimal health.

Basically, in order for our bodies to function at it’s optimal level, we need a whole spectrum of nutrients. These nutrients can be grouped as below:-

  1. Vitamin, minerals, trace minerals
  2. Antioxidants
  3. Essential fatty acids (EFA)
  4. Essential amino acids
  5. Immune boosters
  6. Digestive enzymes
  7. Probiotics and prebiotics
  8. Fiber
  9. Cleansing and detoxification herbs
  10. Alkaline promoters
  11. Phtyoestrogen
  12. Cardiovascular protectors
  13. Brainfoods
  14. Bone Builders

Boy, that’s a whole heap of stuff we need! Do have any idea how to achieve the result you need?

The problem we have is that a so-called balanced diet only considers proportions of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Most people don’t even know about, say, alkaline promoters. Did your doctor ever discuss brainfood or antioxidants with you? I’ll bet that didn’t happen. Umm, something to think about.

The answer is supplementation. Natural supplements should not be considered alternative or complimentary therapies or medicines. They are natural foods, not drugs.

Your Enzyme Potential & How To Improve It – Part 1

Bio Enzymes may be something you associate with getting stains out of your clothes “in the wash”, but I’m talking about something else entirely.

And it’s important! Here are the facts:-

  • We are all born with an inbuilt “enzyme potential”.
  • Our inbuilt enzyme potential is a limited resource.
  • Our enzyme “bank” It gets depleted by:-
    • Eating cooked foods
    • Exercising
    • Becoming stressed
    • Getting ill
    • Having an unhealthy lifestyle.
    • Aging

What are enzymes and what do they do for us?

Enzymes are energized protein molecules. They are responsible for all biological activities in our 60 trillion cells. They are essential for every chemical reaction in our bodies.

As Dr Edward Howell says – “It runs down, health suffers and if it runs out, life ends”

In his book Enzyme Nutrition, he describes the effects of depleting your body’s enzyme bank as, ” . . . one of the paramount causes of premature aging and early death. I also believe it’s the underlying cause of almost all degenerative disease.”

Dr. Howell continues, “To begin with, if the body is overburdened [in supplying] enzymes to the saliva, gastric juice, pancreatic juice and intestinal juice, then it must curtail the production of enzymes for other purposes. If this occurs, then how can the body also make enough enzymes to run the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, muscles and other organs and tissues?” According to Dr. Howell, “This ‘stealing’ of enzymes from other parts of the body to service the digestive tract sets up a competition for enzymes among the various organ systems and tissues of the body. The resulting metabolic dislocations may be the direct cause of cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, and many other chronic incurable disease.”

It our own responsibility to replenish our own enzymes to improve our health, longevity and quality of life. In this series I will be letting you know how to replenish your enzyme bank, naturally.

Bio N-Zymes – Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is Bio N-Zymes™ suitable for children?
Yes. Bio N-Zymes™ is made from natural ingredients, including fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs. It is safe for children above 5 years old. However, you are recommended to halve the recommended dosage for children below 12.

2. Is Bio N-Zymes™ suitable for expecting and breast-feeding mothers?
Expecting and breast-feeding mothers can take Bio N-Zymes™ without any adverse effects. Please consult your physician if in any doubt.

3. Is Bio N-Zymes™ suitable for those on prescription medications?
Yes. Bio N-Zymes™ is a natural fermented fruit, vegetable and herbal drink which provides in a single dose, a chock-full of live enzymes and nutrients, including phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc. in their “pre-digested” form. It’s suitable for all, including those on prescribed medications. If in doubt, please consult your physician before taking Bio N-Zymes™.

4. I understand that Bio N-Zymes™ is a vegetarian formula. How are plant-derived enzymes better than those from animal sources available on the market?
Plant-derived enzymes are active in a broad pH range of 2 to 10, and temperature ranges of 24°C to 50°C, well within the human body’s normal pH and temperature ranges. Animal enzymes remain inactive until they reach the higher pH of the small intestinal tract, so they are not very effective at aiding the digestive process in the stomach.

5. Do I still need to take an enzyme supplement if I am not suffering from symptoms of poor digestion?

Yes, especially if your diet consists mainly of cooked or processed food. When we overburden our internally generated digestive enzymes to handle the abundance of enzyme-depleted foods, we over-stress our body’s resources. Hence less energy is available for rebuilding and rejuvenating worn out and damaged cells and tissues. Enzyme supplementation takes the burden off your body and enables energy to be conserved for other more important metabolic functions, such as repair and rejuvenation processes.

6. Can those with stomach or duodenal ulcers take Bio N-Zymes™?
Those suffering from severe gastric and duodenal ulcers should take enzyme supplements on a full stomach, instead of taking it on its own. Dilute it into a glassful or half a glassful of water and drink it up immediately. If in doubt, please consult your physician before taking Bio N-Zymes™.

7. Can Bio N-Zymes™ be taken along with friendly bacteria supplements? Will enzymes “hurt” these friendly bacteria?

Bio N-Zymes™ may be taken together with friendly bacteria without affecting the potency or integrity of these friendly bacteria. In fact, probiotics actually produce natural digestive enzymes (lactase, etc.) as part of their functioning. Utilising enzymes and probiotics together will synergistically enhance and maintain gastrointestinal well-being.

8. Do enzyme supplements cause the body to stop producing its own enzymes? Will I become dependent on enzyme supplements?
No. Enzyme supplements support normal organ functions without replacing their roles or effectiveness. However, these supplemental enzymes may relieve stress, thus reducing the load of output or energy used by these organs. Supplemental enzymes do not directly control organ function or productivity. There is no known upper limit to the amount of supplemental enzymes that can be consumed. The reason for this is that the body has 1-100 trillion cells. Any one of those cells could be using thousands of different enzymes every second. This allows huge quantities to be used by the body without risk of dependency or overdosing.

9. I heard that enzymes need to be enteric-coated as they can be destroyed by stomach acids or the body’s own enzymes. Why isn’t Bio N-Zymes™ enteric-coated?
While it’s true that some enzymes (including those derived from animal pancreas extracts) become inactive because of the low pH nature of stomach acids, this does not apply to the enzymes found naturally in Bio N-Zymes™. The enzymes in Bio N-Zymes™ are obtained naturally from a blend of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs, fermented by healthful microbes. These enzymes are more acid-resistant so there is no need for enteric coating. This allows Bio N-Zymes™ to be available in liquid form for quicker and optimised absorption.

10. Will enzymes “digest” my mouth, stomach, or intestines?
No! If enzymes could “digest” your mouth, stomach or intestines, the enzymes produced by your own body would have already “digested” you away. These enzymes act solely on the denatured (cooked or damaged) proteins found in foods, or inflamed joints, or debris in your body. Most proteins in their healthy state, are coiled and globular in structure, and this prevents enzymes from acting on them.

11. I am suffering from diabetes. Is Bio N-Zymes™ suitable for me? It tasted a little sweet.
Yes, Bio N-Zymes™ is suitable for all, including those with diabetes. There is 1.95g of natural sugar (from fruits, vegetables, etc.) in every 30ml serving – that’s less than half a teaspoon of granulated sugar.

12. I’ve noticed that some enzyme formulas in the market are in tablet or powder form. How do these fare against liquid form?
It is a known fact that the liquid form provides superior absorption and assimilation rates over the tablet form. This translates to higher efficiency. It is of the utmost importance for those with a poor digestive system, especially the elderly and those suffering from health ailments, to choose a liquid form to ensure they are truly reaping the maximum benefits of the product. Tablets are held together by binders and fillers. In most instances, it may take up to 30 – 45 minutes to breakdown a tablet. Hence, absorption will be delayed.

13. I’ve noticed the enzymes in Bio N-Zymes™ are not listed as amylase, protease, lipase, etc., unlike other digestive enzyme supplements in the market. Why is it so? What type of enzymes does Bio N-Zymes™ contain?
There are several enzyme supplements on the market. However, many of them are digestive enzymes, which contain only several types of enzymes with specific activity – namely amylase to breakdown carbohydrates, protease to breakdown protein, lipase to breakdown fat, etc. These functions are more specific on improving the digestion. Other formulas may contain bromelain or papain, the enzymes from pineapple and papaya respectively, with proteolytic and anti-inflammatory properties. Most of these enzyme formulas have limited enzyme types (check their labels).

Bio N-Zymes™ is unique as it is a fermented blend of over 85 fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, and herbs, carefully chosen to compliment each other. It provides the numerous health-enhancing enzymes existing naturally in these natural sources, along with the enzymes produced by the healthful microbes during the fermentation process. In fact, it is a cocktail of enzymes with a wide range of functions – not limited to improving digestion or with anti-inflammatory properties. It contains other enzymes with antioxidant properties such as SOD-like enzymes, or metabolic enzymes. Apart from that, Bio N-Zymes™ is bursting with naturally occurring nutrients from various plant sources. It’s truly a health-promoting cocktail of natural goodness.

14. Why are there so many types of fruits, vegetables and herbs used in the preparation of Bio N-Zymes™?
Each fruit or vegetable has a specific group of enzymes, which is typical to it. For example, bromelain is unique to pineapple, as papain is to papaya. Hence, a cocktail of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs provide numerous types of enzymes, with numerous functions – all working synergistically to promote health and well-being. This complex formula of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs also provides an array of powerful nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants, etc. to offer better protection against health ailments and illnesses. On top of that, these are in “pre-digested” forms (due to the fermentation process) and more bio-available to the body.

15. I started taking Bio N-Zymes™ for a health complaint. However, after taking it for a few months, my problem is gone. Should I stop taking Bio N-Zymes™?
Good for you! You are one of the many who have benefited from taking Bio N-Zymes™. We strongly encourage you to continue taking it as long as your diet predominantly consists of enzyme-deficient cooked and processed foods, it could help to prevent the recurrence of the health ailment.
