You may have heard that chocolate was good for you, then you may have been confused about what that actually means.

Given that most readily available chocolate is a result of heavy processing and adding other ingredients like sugar and dairy products it be can’t be healthy right? A healthy person’s blood pH level should be slightly alkaline (in the range of pH 7.35 – pH 7.45). However, most people today have an acidic blood level due to pollution, poor eating habits, stress and lack of exercise. This acidity adds to the stress of the organs involved in blood circulation and cleansing, such as the liver, heart, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, etc. As a result of this stress, many organs start to deteriorate, which may lead to health conditions, diseases and ailments such as fatigue, body aches and cardiovascular diseases that could develop into chronic diseases or even cancer.

An acidic body is primarily caused by a diet high in meat or refined carbohydrates. The lack of dietary fibre leads to the accumulation of animal fats, resulting in hardening of the blood vessels and stress on the organs. Once weakened, the body is susceptible to disease.

Humans are born with a body that is slightly alkaline, but on average, our bodies tend to become acidic after the age of 25. This is due to ageing, environmental and food pollution, poor diet, stress, unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle, overworking, etc. Acidity can be the cause of many diseases because it impedes normal enzyme functions. In a study carried out by the University of Tokyo, up to 90% out of the 600 cancer patients surveyed have an acidic body, of which, 85% have pH levels of 5.8 and below. “Immune cells” are adversely affected by acidity and may succumb to cellular poisoning or death if exposed to it for prolonged periods. With the immune cells severely depleted or damaged, virus and other disease-causing agents can wreak havoc in the body. You may know have read that consuming vinegar can reduce fatigue, aid digestion, relieve aches, and alleviate body acidity, but not many people understand the mechanism behind this.

In 1953, a British scientist, Professor Hans Adolf Krebs won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine with his discovery that is now called the Kreb’s Cycle Theory.

This marked the beginning of the understanding of how vinegar can enhance health by improving digestion, breaking down and converting food into energy. According to Kreb’s theory, the starch and sugar in the food we eat is converted into glucose, the fats are converted into fatty acids, the protein in meat and beans is converted into more than 20 types of amino acids.


All these nutrients must be combined with acetic acid (from vinegar) before they can enter the citric acid cycle. In this citric acid cycle, these nutrients are converted into energy (adenosine triphosphate, ATP) that can be utilised by the body. During the conversion process, the food is continuously converted into citric acid, which is then converted into cis-Acotinate, isocitrate, ketoglutarate, succinate, fumarate, malate and oxaloacetate. The cycle repeats itself when the acids are converted back to citric acid.

Maintaining this citric acid cycle is very important, but the cycle cannot function properly if the body is tired or restricted by an improper diet. When the nutrients are not fully synthesized, the incomplete combustion residue will be converted into pyruvate, which will break down into lactic acid when exposed to hydrogen ion. The accumulation of lactic acid in the body results in muscle aches, pain in the nerves and lethargy. It’s not something we talk about. Generally we don’t even want to think about what’s going on inside there. Unless we have a problem. Even then we find it embarrassing.

Recognizing your colon as a major organ which affects the way you feel every day is a step towards improving your life.

Your Colon

The old saying is “death begins in the colon” is literally true. However, I recommend you turn this into a more positive “health begins in the colon”.

Our colon’s function is to act as your body’s sewage system. Effectively eliminating dangerous toxins. Problems occur when this process becomes inefficient, then retained waste leads to re-absorption of toxins into your bloodstream.

Are laxatives the answer? Absolutely not. These may seem like an easy fix. They are not. You can become dependent on them, and over time your colon’s normal ability to naturally eliminate waste will be permanently destroyed. Laxatives should be considered only a very temporary solution to a specific problem.

What your body needs is fiber (or fibre depending on where on the plant you live). Fiber is a safe and natural way of enhancing your body’s ability to rid itself of wastes and toxins.

  • A Cleansing agent – fiber helps to cleanse the colon by gently sweeping the colon clean of compacted, putrefying, waste materials and helping to eliminate excess cholesterol and dietary toxins. Think of a brush physically cleaning your colon.
