Natural Superfoods – Learn From The Ancients

Why should you get interested in Natural Superfoods?

Simply, they are a superior source of nutrients, being nutrient dense relative to the calories they contain.  Why is this important? Your normal diet, despite your best efforts, may not contain sufficient nutrients.  So, while you may be trying to consume all the nutrients for your health from a regular diet (and even if you’re deliberately adding more fruit and vegetables), the problem is that our foods are being grown in soils which are mineral depleted. Processing, storage and cooking also takes a toll on the nutrient content.  It’s possible to overeat and still be nutrient deficient.

I’ve already posted a lot of information on Natural Superfoods, like Wheatgrass, Spirulina, chlorella and Stabilized Rice Bran in this blog.  Is there anything new to report?  The answer is always yes!  We are constantly rediscovering what traditional cultures have long known. The following Superfoods are certainly not new, but they may be news.

Raw Cacao

Raw cacao beans contain possibly the world’s most concentrated source of antioxidants found in any food. They are extremely high in Magnesium which has been found to be the most common deficient major mineral even following a balanced diet. Their iron content is stunning, one small 28 gram serving of raw cacao beans gives 314% of the recommended daily allowance of iron. Raw cacao beans have a magnificent antioxidant (ORAC) score of 95,500. To put that into perspective, that’s 14 times more antioxidant flavonoids than red wine and 21 times more than green tea.

This does not mean you will get the benefits described above by eating heaps of chocolate. As with a lot of processed food changes have occurred in the processing. Most cocoa powder and commercial chocolate is processed via the “Dutch method” meaning it is subjected to scorching temperatures of up to 150°C with the additional aid of solvents, thus destroying most of the nutrients and antioxidants. Be sure to buy certified organic raw cacao in a powder, nib or whole bean form as the temperature will have never been allowed to exceed 40°C , allowing all the heat-sensitive vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to remain intact.

Maca

Maca powder is from the Maca root. Maca root is a flavorful ancient superfood from Peru. Maca has been cultivated for at least 2000 years and consumed by Inca warriors to increase strength and endurance. It is a highly nutritious food that has been used traditionally to gain increased energy, promote sexual desire, support fertility and enhance immune system function. It continues today to be a significant staple food and medicinal plant for the Peruvian people and is now widely available the world over as a whole food supplement.

Coconuts

Apart from being delicious, young coconuts are one of the highest sources of electrolytes in nature. Electrolytes are ionized salts in our cells. Electrolytes transport energy throughout the body.

The molecular structure of coconut water is identical to human blood plasma, which means that it is immediately recognized by the body and put to good use. Drinking the juice from a young coconut is like giving your body an instant blood transfusion. In fact coconut water was commonly used as an emergency transfusion for wounded troops (of both sides) during World War II in the Pacific.

The only problem is availability, so when you get the chance be sure you take advantage and drink all you can.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil supports healthy metabolic function and is a revered anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal agent. Coconut oil’s saturated fat is of the medium-chain fatty acid variety, which are digested more easily and utilized differently by the body than other saturated fats (like butter, meat and eggs). Whereas other saturated fats are stored in the body’s cells, the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy. Coconut oil will actually speed up metabolism so your body will burn more calories in a day which will contribute to weight loss.

Pacific islanders consider coconut oil to be the cure-all gift from nature for all illness.

Noni

This fruit has been used by Polynesian islanders as a regenerative medicine for more than 1500 years. Research documents that the noni fruit has astounding anti-bacterial properties, even against E-coli. It has anti-tumor activity, anti-inflammatory properties, is effective as a pain reliever, generates cell repair and strengthens the immune system.

Noni contains a multitude of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytonutrients. Many believe that the synergistic effect of the multi-spectrum nutrients is what gives it its potency. It has been proven beneficial for colds and flu’s, digestive disorders, skin disorders, pain relief, headaches, infections and more.

For best results look for a freeze-dried product that uses only the whole fruit or when buying the juice look for a brand that does not use pasteurizing.

Nutrition – Starting From Zero

We are constantly bombarded with messages from the media telling us that foods we have consumed for years are suddenly bad for us. One day eggs are good for you, the next day they are bad for your heart – what is the actual situation now?

You can’t afford to miss the information in the new movie “Food Matters” – Click the Title to find out more.

You need to eat more leafy green vegetables, reduce your consumption of bad fats (saturated animal fats), increase your consumption of good fats (like olive oil and avocado), eat quality lean protein, eat more fish (but beware of the mercury!), reduce your intake of sugar. Eat fewer processed foods. So what is the bottom line? What are nutritionists trying to tell you? It all boils down to the fact that what you don’t eat is more important than what you do eat.

Start From Zero
The best way to figure out what you should be eating to live up to your highest health potential is to start from recording what you are eating. It’s so easy to forget that extra bit of something. So, use your digital camera or phone camera. Every time you eat, stop, think, take a picture. Remember that the camera doesn’t lie. At the end of each day, write a list of the foods shown in those pictures. This may take a while, but you will be able to see that most foods can be broken down into a few simple categories at their basic ingredients:

  • Meat (beef, pork, chicken, fish, other seafood, etc)
  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, cream, desserts, etc)
  • Corn products (bread, chips, popcorn, etc)
  • Wheat (pastas, breads, desserts, etc)
  • Soy (bread, desserts, drinks, anything processed, etc)
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Water
  • Energy drinks
  • Alcoholic drinks

Now take out a fresh piece of paper and add only the items that fall under the category of fruits and vegetables. This is what is called starting from zero. Remove everything that does not contribute to your health and only add back those items that you know are good for you. Mark whether the food is natural or processed. Aim for unprocessed, preferably organic, fruit and vegetables.

Why Fruits and Vegetables?

The governments of the world recommend that you eat between 5 to 10 fruits and vegetables every day. This recommendation is a great one and it has helped dozens of people lose weight and become healthier. It’s easy eat 5 to 10 fruits and vegetables a day by eliminating other snacks like muffins, cakes or cookies. Apples, bananas, mandarin’s, oranges are easy to take with you almost anywhere, just wash them at home to make life a bit easier.  Find out more about the colors of fruit & vegetables HERE

It is only by eliminating the unhealthy, extraneous or over-processed foods that you will be able to incorporate the recommended quantity of healthy ones.

The Building Blocks of Health
Think of this exercise as a way to build up your health, starting from the base. By eliminating meat, dairy and aggravating grains from your diet you prepare your body for proper nutrition. You allow yourself to cleanse and you provide your body with all the enzymes, the minerals and the vitamins that your body requires for proper functioning.

Looking at the new list of healthy foods, you might see that it needs to be improved upon a bit. Why not add some new and exotic fruits and vegetables that you never tried before? Add more healthful grains in the form of brown rice, quinoa, barley and buckwheat if you find you need something denser. Old fashioned foods like rolled oats are great for you as well as tasting good.

Give Yourself a New Start
By starting fresh you give your body a break and a chance to rejuvenate itself. If you decide that you would like to add some of the things from the original list back into your diet, do so only 30 days after this exercise. Then watch to see how your body reacts to this newly added food. If you don’t experience any side effects then you can continue to eat it, once again. Otherwise you have proof that it was never that good for you in the first place.
