Harvesting Cranberries
Harvesting Cranberries

Researchers (including ones from Rutgers University in New Jersey and the University of Michigan ) have shown that cranberry offers protection against certain antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberry prevents UTI-causing bacteria from adhering to urinary tract walls so they can be flushed out with the urine stream before doing any damage.

Researchers have found that drinking three glasses of cranberry juice a day significantly raises the level of ‘good cholesterol’ in the blood and increase plasma antioxidant levels, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

With a potent formula consisting of no less than 35% organic acids, 9% quinic acid, anthocyanin, procyanidin and other nutrients, 2 chewable tablets are equivalent to the goodness of 100 grams of fresh cranberries.

Because cranberries can prevent bacteria from adhering to teeth, taking these tablets can promote good dental health and minimise dental plaque and dental caries (tooth decay). They literally cleanse your mouth as you chew!

The antioxidant power of cranberries enhances general health so your skin stays healthy and younger looking.Cranberries - ORAC Score

Sugar Addiction – Is It Real?

Sugar does seem to be addictive.  It’s certainly very hard to give it up.

Your body learns fast that sugar means energy. A lot of energy running through the system translates into a good overall mood. Unfortunately, the good mood lasts just as long as the amount of sugar in your blood stays above a certain level. Once the amount of sugar drops below that particular level, the mood changes and the body starts craving the next sugar fix that will make everything feel good again. In this respect, sugar seems to operate just like any other psychoactive substance like adrenaline. Your body can get high on all these substances and will react adversely if it doesn’t get it’s fix – that’s an addiction.  An innocent addiction? Perhaps, but the swings can impact on your pancreas’ ability to produce insulin, increasing your risk of getting diabetes.

The Sugar Addicts’ Diet focuses on breaking the addiction to sugar in order to prevent the mood swings that prompt the addict to reach out for one more sugary treat. These mood swings are hard to resist and the promise of the next fix is so tempting that many people have no idea they’re hooked on something that is not healthy. Truth be known, most addicts don’t want to face reality and understand the truth about their addiction and many people hooked on sugar or adrenalin have absolutely no idea that they’re using a substance to prop up their moods.

This diet is largely based on the Glycemic Index approach because its purpose is to weed out the sugary foods and replace them with foods belonging to a lower Glycemic Index that release their sugar content slowly into the bloodstream and do not trigger the rush. The basic idea is to identify hidden sugar in the foods you eat. Many people don’t know that it’s not just sweets or soft drinks that contain sugar, but also a lot of sauces, dips, yogurts and ready-to-eat foods have enough sugar in them to cause the mood swings.

Processed foods have sugar disguised under various names, like:-

  • Glucose
  • Fructose
  • Dextrose
  • Lactose
  • Maltose
  • Sucrose
  • Any kind of syrup

It’s pretty easy to figure that this diet is more of a lifestyle choice than a proper diet. Of course you will lose weight by avoiding the foods rich in sugar, but we cannot be sure if this is the best way to go for a committed user. If you want to lose a certain number of pounds in a certain number of weeks, then you’re probably better off choosing another eating plan because nobody knows how fast you can lose weight under this one. Still, as a long-term maintenance solution, this eating plan is a good idea, especially for those who are used to eating a lot of sweets and are afraid that all those lost pounds will come back.

Hoax John Hopkins Email – Cancer Update from John Hopkins

Below is the text of an email being circulated.

You will note it is attributed to Johns Hopkins, a world famous and highly respected medical research school based in the United States. However, none of the claims in the message were published or in any way endorsed by Johns Hopkins. In fact, Johns Hopkins has released a statement denying any involvement.

It really is a shame they cannot address the email and give us their point of view, rather than just denying any involvement.  Surely it’s a good thing to give the public sensible anti cancer information.

Of course I’d like that information to be correct and be useful in our daily existence.   To ensure you’re getting correct, up to date information I recommend you read Dr David Servan-Schreiber’s book “Anti Cancer – A new way of life” which directly addresses a lot of the points. Find out more about the book HERE.

The text of the hoax email follows:-

“AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY.

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :

1.   Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2.    Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime.
3.   When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumours.

4.  When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5.  To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6.   Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7.   Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.
8.  Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9.    When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.
11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
WHAT CANCER CELLS FEED ON:
a.     Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added> to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg’s aminos or sea salt.
b.     Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved.
c.      Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.
d.     A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment.  About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).
e.     Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.  Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic build-up.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body’s normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Nutrition – Starting From Zero

We are constantly bombarded with messages from the media telling us that foods we have consumed for years are suddenly bad for us. One day eggs are good for you, the next day they are bad for your heart – what is the actual situation now?

You can’t afford to miss the information in the new movie “Food Matters” – Click the Title to find out more.

You need to eat more leafy green vegetables, reduce your consumption of bad fats (saturated animal fats), increase your consumption of good fats (like olive oil and avocado), eat quality lean protein, eat more fish (but beware of the mercury!), reduce your intake of sugar. Eat fewer processed foods. So what is the bottom line? What are nutritionists trying to tell you? It all boils down to the fact that what you don’t eat is more important than what you do eat.

Start From Zero
The best way to figure out what you should be eating to live up to your highest health potential is to start from recording what you are eating. It’s so easy to forget that extra bit of something. So, use your digital camera or phone camera. Every time you eat, stop, think, take a picture. Remember that the camera doesn’t lie. At the end of each day, write a list of the foods shown in those pictures. This may take a while, but you will be able to see that most foods can be broken down into a few simple categories at their basic ingredients:

  • Meat (beef, pork, chicken, fish, other seafood, etc)
  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, cream, desserts, etc)
  • Corn products (bread, chips, popcorn, etc)
  • Wheat (pastas, breads, desserts, etc)
  • Soy (bread, desserts, drinks, anything processed, etc)
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Water
  • Energy drinks
  • Alcoholic drinks

Now take out a fresh piece of paper and add only the items that fall under the category of fruits and vegetables. This is what is called starting from zero. Remove everything that does not contribute to your health and only add back those items that you know are good for you. Mark whether the food is natural or processed. Aim for unprocessed, preferably organic, fruit and vegetables.

Why Fruits and Vegetables?

The governments of the world recommend that you eat between 5 to 10 fruits and vegetables every day. This recommendation is a great one and it has helped dozens of people lose weight and become healthier. It’s easy eat 5 to 10 fruits and vegetables a day by eliminating other snacks like muffins, cakes or cookies. Apples, bananas, mandarin’s, oranges are easy to take with you almost anywhere, just wash them at home to make life a bit easier.  Find out more about the colors of fruit & vegetables HERE

It is only by eliminating the unhealthy, extraneous or over-processed foods that you will be able to incorporate the recommended quantity of healthy ones.

The Building Blocks of Health
Think of this exercise as a way to build up your health, starting from the base. By eliminating meat, dairy and aggravating grains from your diet you prepare your body for proper nutrition. You allow yourself to cleanse and you provide your body with all the enzymes, the minerals and the vitamins that your body requires for proper functioning.

Find out more about Enzymes by viewing our Enzyme Series HERE

Looking at the new list of healthy foods, you might see that it needs to be improved upon a bit. Why not add some new and exotic fruits and vegetables that you never tried before? Add more healthful grains in the form of brown rice, quinoa, barley and buckwheat if you find you need something denser. Old fashioned foods like rolled oats are great for you as well as tasting good.

Give Yourself a New Start
By starting fresh you give your body a break and a chance to rejuvenate itself. If you decide that you would like to add some of the things from the original list back into your diet, do so only 30 days after this exercise. Then watch to see how your body reacts to this newly added food. If you don’t experience any side effects then you can continue to eat it, once again. Otherwise you have proof that it was never that good for you in the first place.

Look After Your Body – Five Common Mistakes People Make When Looking After Their Body

Common Mistake Number 1

Thinking you will be young forever. Youth is very forgiving of late nights, early mornings, and poor eating habits. Later in life that the sins of your youth can catch up with you. Too much alcohol, sun exposure or other bad habits can leave lasting ill effects. As you age, the signs of excess in your youth will start appearing.

Solution: Realize you’re not “bullet proof”, and look after your health and well-being from any early age. It’s never too early to be aware of your body’s needs.

Common Mistake Number 2.

Eating too much fast food laden with sugar, salt and fats. Sure it’s a quick fix when you’re hungry and in a rush, but is the lingering regret worth it?

Solution: THINK before you eat. Look for better quality offerings. It’s actually becoming easier to find fast food which is healthier. If you can only find pizza, then add a salad and cut down on the number of pizza slices you consume. Beware of salad dressings, use olive oil and vinegar to get the benefits of both.

Common Mistake Number 3

Not drinking enough water. It’s a fact that a majority of people are trying to get through their busy lives in a dehydrated state.

Solution: Drink 9 to 12 glasses of water each day. Seem too much or too difficult? Drink 1 glass on waking, 1 glass before breakfast, 1 glass after you clean your teeth in the morning, 1 glass mid-morning, 1 glass after each time you go to the restroom (say 4/5 times a day), 1 glass before lunch, 1 glass mid-afternoon, 1 glass when you get home from work, 1 glass before dinner, 1 glass after dinner, 1 glass after you clean your teeth in the evening. Use daily events as “triggers” for your water consumption. Try to drink purified, energized water at all times.

Common Mistake Number 4

Smoking cigarettes. It’s now well recognized that smoking is extremely detrimental to your health. Also avoid “second hand” smoke.

Solution: Never smoke, simply don’t start. If you currently smoke give it up – your body will love you for it. Keep away from places where you’ll be exposed to smoke.

Common Mistake Number 5

Thinking it’s too late to do anything to improve your health. Don’t give up on you!

Solution: Remember that the cells in your body are constantly being renewed. Give your cells the best possible chance to be repaired and rejuvenated. Nourish your body with natural superfoods to provide concentrated nutrition and antioxidants, keep your body alkalized, hydrated and detoxified.

Your Personal Firewall Against An Acidic Body – Part 5 – Regulate Your Body

Regulate Your Body pH To Restore & Maintain Prime Health

A healthy person’s blood pH level should be slightly alkaline (in the range of pH 7.35 – pH 7.45). However, most people today have an acidic blood level due to pollution, poor eating habits, stress and lack of exercise. This acidity adds to the stress of the organs involved in blood circulation and cleansing, such as the liver, heart, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, etc. As a result of this stress, many organs start to deteriorate, which may lead to health conditions, diseases and ailments such as fatigue, body aches and cardiovascular diseases that could develop into chronic diseases or even cancer.

An acidic body is primarily caused by a diet high in meat or refined carbohydrates. The lack of dietary fibre leads to the accumulation of animal fats, resulting in hardening of the blood vessels and stress on the organs. Once weakened, the body is susceptible to disease.

The Crucial Influence of pH Level on Health

The advantages of blood alkalinity

Blood that is slightly alkaline flows much smoother in the body. This efficient circulation allows greater amount of oxygen and nutrients to be transported and absorbed by the body. This helps to raise the metabolic rate, increase cell vitality, and improve overall energy. Slightly alkaline blood not only prevents arteries from hardening, but also reduces the amount of deposited fat on the arterial walls. This free blood flow helps reduce the potential for and symptoms of many cardiovascular diseases.

Slight alkalinity is a sign of good health; it indicates that the body’s immune system i.e. natural resistance and healing capacity, is in good condition, and able to resist the onset of many diseases.

The disadvantages of body acidity

Acidic blood has a higher viscosity. This prevents smooth blood flow, leading to poor oxygen transfer. The poor flow rate also leads to the hardening of blood vessels.

Cholesterol, adipose tissue, triglycerides, and other harmful compounds tend to accumulate on the cell wall when the blood is acidic. This can result in atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries) and can accelerate hardening of the blood vessels, or lead to the accumulation of toxins in the body which can cause chronic disease.

Are you plagued by an acidic body?

Answer the following questions to find out for yourself!

If you have 5 or more of the listed symptoms, then there is a high chance that your body is acidic.

Move or perform tasks at a very slow pace. (You have the will but not the strength to perform tasks.)
Feel sleepy when you ride in a car or drive
Feel tired after mild exercise. Short of breath (panting) when walking up or down the stairs
Suffer from poor memory and concentration
Experience coldness in the limbs
Bruise easily, experience frequent skin breakouts, or bleeding gums
Prone to eczema
Have dull complexion or acne
Suffer from athlete’s foot
Tend to suffer infections (pus) on wounds
Suffer a protruding abdomen even though overall average in size.
Easily put on weight / Difficulty controlling body weight
Suffer from constipation or frequent diarrhoea
Have bad breath
Frequently suffer from tinnitus
Frequently feel dizzy, feeling very tired especially in the afternoons
Have weak immune system; prone to flu and fever
Frequently bitten by mosquitoes / insects

Lifestyle and diet

If you check 5 or more boxes, your lifestyle and diet could be contributing to an acidic body.

Frequent all-nighters or late nights (sleep after 1am)
Frequently eat supper, or have dinner after 8pm
Frequently skip breakfast
Smoke
Drink alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, whisky, etc.)
Drink more than 3 cups of coffee daily
Drink carbonated beverages daily
Frequently consume meat
Eat very little fruits and vegetables
Drink less than 2000ml of water each day, or drink water that is acidic (distilled water, RO water)
Like to eat processed food, fried food or sweet snacks
Lack physical exercise
Live or work under constant pressure , and usually find it difficult to de-stress
Constantly in a polluted environment (surrounded by second hand cigarette smoke, waste gas from factories, etc.)

Do not be “ambushed” by acid

Humans are born with a body that is slightly alkaline, but on average, our bodies tend to become acidic after the age of 25. This is due to ageing, environmental and food pollution, poor diet, stress, unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle, overworking, etc. Acidity can be the cause of many diseases because it impedes normal enzyme functions. In a study carried out by the University of Tokyo, up to 90% out of the 600 cancer patients surveyed have an acidic body, of which, 85% have pH levels of 5.8 and below. “Immune cells” are adversely affected by acidity and may succumb to cellular poisoning or death if exposed to it for prolonged periods. With the immune cells severely depleted or damaged, virus and other disease-causing agents can wreak havoc in the body. Approximately 40 million members of Japan’s various “golden years” clubs are actively promoting vinegar as one of the best products for reducing fatigue, and returning the body to its normal alkaline pH level. These Japanese in their golden years drink large amounts of “vinegar” during meals to improve overall bodily functions and revitalise the organs. It is no coincidence that the Japanese have the highest human life expectancy in the world!

The best way to overcome an acidic body is to consume more alkaline food and beverages.

Alkaline food

Most vegetables, garlic, mushrooms, onion, wheatgrass, etc.
Algae: chlorophyta, spirulina, seaweed, etc.
Most fruits: apple, banana, lemon, grape, orange, watermelon, pineapple, Japanese plum, strawberry, etc.
Sprouts like alfalfa…

Acidic food

Almost all meat products: beef, chicken, pork, duck
Almost all seafood: fish, oyster, prawns, etc.
Most grains & beans: flour, bread, corn, plain rice, noodles, pasta, biscuit, wheat, barley, etc.
Dairy products: butter, milk, cheese, cake, etc.
Almost all oil and fats, including corn oil and olive oil
Others: coffee, carbonated drinks, refined sugar, alcoholic drinks, medicine, food tainted with pesticides and insecticides, canned or pickled foods

Your Personal Firewall Against An Acidic Body – Part 4 – Transform Yourself

If you regularly consume food that is high in calories and mainly consists of fat and protein, have inadequate physical exercise and high stress levels at work, you are likely to have a sluggish citric acid cycle and a huge accumulation of lactic acid in the blood stream.

You are also highly susceptible to obesity, muscle aches, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. You might have to rely on medication if you do not start adjusting your diet, exercise, and lifestyle soon. However, you can easily bring your health back on the right track by improving your citric acid cycle with the introduction of natural acetic acid (vinegar) into your diet.

Vinegar – Your Personal Firewall Against Diseases

1. Eliminates fatigue & reduces muscle aches

Lactic acid tends to accumulate in the body after strenuous exercises or from consuming too much meat. This build up of lactic acid causes tiredness, fatigue, stiff shoulders, natalgia / sore lower back, inflammation of the joints and shoulders, sciatic nerve pain / pelvic pain, neuralgia / aching nerves, knee neuralgia / sore knees, shoulder neuralgia / spinal aches, etc. Lactic acid also causes poor blood circulation, resulting in blood acidity, which is one of the main causes of neuralgia. Lactic acid combines with protein to form lactic protein, which causes shoulder soreness and neuralgia / lower back pain, as well as arterial hardening if it is allowed to accumulate in the blood.

2. Transforms an acidic body

All patients suffering from chronic diseases and cancer have an acidic body, which is also the case for those who consume a large amount of meat in their diet. This is probably why people who consume large amounts of meat are more prone to cancer. The risk of disease is reduced when we reduce acidity in the body. Vinegar might taste sour (acidic) but it becomes alkaline once it enters the body, and taking it frequently will make the blood slightly alkaline which is the body’s healthy and natural state.

3. Revitalises cells, supports blood flow

The poly amino acids in vinegar cause red blood cells to be more flexible and able to pass smoothly through narrow capillaries to transport oxygen to all parts of the body, aiding cell revitalization. Smooth blood flow can help prevent high blood pressure, heart diseases and stroke. It also alleviates edema and varicose veins that are caused by poor blood circulation.

4. Cleanses blood, prevents arthritic pain

Clean blood is slightly alkaline and lower in viscosity. When we consume a lot of meat, our blood and body fluids become acidic and more waste products are produced during metabolism and energy output. This increase in waste matter puts additional stress on the kidneys and can lead to uremia in serious cases. Arthritic pains happen when there is too much uric acid in the blood stream; the waste increase in the blood also leads to higher blood viscosity which can result in hardened arteries. V inegar helps maintain a healthy alkaline level by preventing uric acid build up and body fluid acidification. It also promotes the excretion of deposited uric acid, reduces the burden on kidneys, prevents gout and solves each kind of fearful cardiovascular disease.

5. Relieves gastrointestinal discomforts

Nowadays, people often suffer from autonomic nerve abnormalities due to extreme pressure. Autonomic nerve abnormality results in an over production of gastric acid which lead to intestinal mucosal membrane injury, stomach wall hemorrhage, and gastric and duodenal ulcers. Acetic acid (also found in vinegar) is mildly alkaline so taking acetic acid can neutralize strong acids and alleviate ulcers caused by excessive gastric juice.

In times of low gastric acid production, the acetic acid in vinegar can play the role of gastric acid and help in the digestion and absorption of food. At the same time, its antibacterial properties promote the healing of the affected areas.

6. Facilitates calcium absorption

The smell, taste and composition of vinegar can stimulate alimentary organs / digestive system and enhance digestion and absorption of nutrients in food. Vinegar also improves the breakdown of food into its nutritious components for easy absorption by the body. For example, calcium and vinegar can combine into calcium acetate that is easily absorbed by the body. In this way, vinegar helps the body absorb more calcium. The citric acid in vinegar enters the body and promotes the full utilisation of calcium by the body; the results are stronger bones, less mood swings, and a better night’s sleep.

7. Fights obesity

Most weight loss medications on the market fight obesity by suppressing the absorption of calories, but this can lead to poor nutrient uptake and have adverse effects on health. Consuming vinegar assists calorie burning while maintaining adequate nutrient intake. When food is consumed, the digestion process converts sugar into glucose, oil and fat into fatty acids, and protein into amino acids. These nutrients require acetic acid (available in vinegar) to act as a catalyst before they can enter the citric acid cycle to be converted into energy for the body. In the absence of acetic acid as a catalyst, these nutrients will turn into fat and be stored in our body. Consuming vinegar not only improves digestion and nutrient absorption, but it also boosts metabolism and caloric expenditure for optimised energy – so no excess calories are left to be converted to fat.

8. Eases constipation

Vinegar improves metabolism and promotes the excretion of waste from the body. It also supports intestinal elasticity and the production of carbonic acid that facilitates bowel movement. Some people who consume highly concentrated vinegar are even known to excrete oil from their body during bowel movement, and this phenomenon can be attributed to the ability of vinegar to break down fats.

9. Beautifies the skin and improves complexion

Lipid peroxidation refers to the oxidative degradation of lipids. It is the process whereby free radicals “steal” electrons from the lipids in cell membranes, resulting in cell damage and causing signs of ageing . Vinegar helps prevent lipid peroxidation, promote skin metabolism and prevent the production of brown spots, keeping skin fair, young, and healthy.

In short, vinegar can alleviate a host of skin conditions including dermatitis, brown spots, acne , eczema, etc . by improving metabolism, blood circulation, and fat metabolism in the skin.

10. Prevents diabetes

The number of diabetic patients is rising in many countries all over the world. The major reasons for this are an imbalanced diet, insufficient exercise as well as poor lifestyle habits and increasing stress at work.

Sugar, protein and fat that our body absorbs are burned to produce energy. Insulin is needed for the absorption of glucose (converted from sugar) into cells. However, when there is insufficient insulin, this glucose remains in the blood stream instead of being absorbed into cells and is then excreted from the body via urine, causing excessive sweet urine (glycosuria) or diabetes mellitus.

Consuming large amounts of vinegar (acetic acid) on a regular basis can increase the activity of acetic acid in the body. This enhances the citric acid cycle and converts glucose into energy for full utilisation by cells. In this way, vinegar helps solve diabetic problems caused by incomplete glucose metabolism in the body.

11. Prevents cold & flu

The best way to prevent a cold or flu is by strengthening the body’s immune system. The abundance of vitamins found in vinegar can help prevent cold and flu and reduce fatigue. Vitamin A is closely related to the formation of glycoprotein which helps moisten the mucous membrane and prevent the invasion of filterable viruses. Vinegar’s preventive powers are enhanced when taken in conjunction with a diet high in yellow-green vegetables. Vinegar is also rich in Vitamin C that is good for suppressing the flu virus and the spread of infection. The Vitamin B1 in vinegar reduces fatigue, fights cold and flu and maintains optimal bodily functions.

12. Reduces hangovers

As vinegar can accelerate the citric acid cycle, taking concentrated vinegar before and after drinking alcohol helps prevent drunkenness and cure hangovers. The consumed alcohol is rapidly broken down in the citric acid cycle, relieving your liver from the stress of breaking down alcohol.

Your Personal Firewall Against An Acidic Body – Understanding the Citric Acid Cycle – Part 3

You may know have read that consuming vinegar can reduce fatigue, aid digestion, relieve aches, and alleviate body acidity, but not many people understand the mechanism behind this.

In 1953, a British scientist, Professor Hans Adolf Krebs won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine with his discovery that is now called the Kreb’s Cycle Theory.

This marked the beginning of the understanding of how vinegar can enhance health by improving digestion, breaking down and converting food into energy. According to Kreb’s theory, the starch and sugar in the food we eat is converted into glucose, the fats are converted into fatty acids, the protein in meat and beans is converted into more than 20 types of amino acids.

All these nutrients must be combined with acetic acid (from vinegar) before they can enter the citric acid cycle. In this citric acid cycle, these nutrients are converted into energy (adenosine triphosphate, ATP) that can be utilised by the body. During the conversion process, the food is continuously converted into citric acid, which is then converted into cis-Acotinate, isocitrate, ketoglutarate, succinate, fumarate, malate and oxaloacetate. The cycle repeats itself when the acids are converted back to citric acid.

Maintaining this citric acid cycle is very important, but the cycle cannot function properly if the body is tired or restricted by an improper diet. When the nutrients are not fully synthesized, the incomplete combustion residue will be converted into pyruvate, which will break down into lactic acid when exposed to hydrogen ion. The accumulation of lactic acid in the body results in muscle aches, pain in the nerves and lethargy. The accumulation of lactic acid in the blood stream results in an acidic body; which is a magnet for chronic diseases. QUICK LINK TO THE SOLUTION & FAQS

Nutrition Intelligence – Glossary – Antioxidants, Vitamins, Phytochemicals

Glossary of Terms you may find useful. Got something you can add? Just post a comment with the details.

A

Antioxidants Group of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phyto-nutrients, phyto-chemicals) which help protect your body from free radicals (caused by normal body functions, aging, pollutants, pesticides, antibiotic use and other factors).

Adaptogen – That which helps boost, balance and normalize functions in your body.

B

Bioflavanoids – Sometimes referred to as Vitamin P, these help to enhance the absorption of Vitamin C. The human body does not produce these so they must be supplied by your diet. They help to promote circulation, stimulate bile production, and act with Vitamin C to preserve and protect the structure of capillary blood vessels.

D

Demulcent – Helps to soothe and relieve internal inflammation.

E

Emollient – Helps to soothe and soften inflamed tissue

F

Free Radicals – A single or group of unstable molecules/atoms that can cause damage to cells, leading to breakdown and disease. Visualize and apple – when you cut it and leave the cut surface exposed to air.It turns brown, almost like it’s rusting. Oxidization has occurred. In a similar way unstable oxygen molecules in your body are the free radicals that cause your unprotected organs to “rust” and breakdown.

P

Phytochemicals – Literally meaning “plant chemicals”, phytochemicals are protective food factors derived from a variety of plant sources. Phtyochemicals have powerful health benefits. Whenever there is plant life, phytochemicals protect plants from attack by their enemies in the environment, like bacteria, viruses, radiation and insects. Research is now showing that we can benefit from these life-sustaining qualities as well. Good news for us. Plants have been in existence much longer than man and know much more about survival. Research indicates that phytochemicals can provide protection against some types of cancer.

T

Tonic – A product that is strengthening and invigorating.

V

Vitamins really deserve there own glossary! Vitamins are organic chemicals that are necessary for growth, metabolism, and overall health and well-being. Vitamins originate in food, and are categorized as either fat soluble (meaning they can be stored in the body for long periods of time) OR water soluble (these pass easily through our bodies, cannot be stored, must be replenished daily).

Vitamin A – Also known as Beta Carotene, a fat-soluble vitamin essential for cell growth, development, reproduction, and immunity. It is stored primarily in the liver and is considered one of the most potent antioxidants.

Vitamin B1 – Also known as Thiamine, a water-soluble vitamin, beneficial to the nervous system. It helps to convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy.

Vitamin B2 – Also known as Riboflavin, a water-soluble vitamin which helps with energy production. It must be replaced constantly. It is the most common deficiency.

Vitamin B3 – Also known as Niacin, a water-soluble vitamin, a major player against heart disease. It helps to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Vitamin B6 – Also known as Pyridoxine, this water-soluble vitamin goes through the body in only 8 hours. It is needed for red-blood cell production and cellular growth. It also plays a key role in the immune system and antibody production.

Vitamin B12 – Also known as Cyanocobalamin, a water-soluble vitamin known for its energizing capabilities. It is essential for nerve tissue, promotes growth, memory and regenerates red blood cells.

Vitamin B15 – Also known as Pantothenic Acid, this water-soluble vitamin helps protect against cardiovascular disease as ell as helping with symptoms of arthritis. It helps encourage healing, protects the liver and immune system.

Biotin -This water-soluble vitamin is essential for the metabolism of vitamin C, fat and protein. It helps with healthy hair, skin and nails.

Vitamin C – This water-soluble vitamin is essential for formation of collagen (exists between cells to hold tissue together). It is necessary for growth and integrity of bones, blood vessels, teeth and gums. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and has many powerful properties; anti-cancer, prevention of blood clots.

Vitamin D – This is a fat-soluble vitamin that the skin can produce on its own when exposed to direct sunlight. In only 15 minutes a day, your body can manufacture all it needs. It is not very abundant in food, and is stored in the liver for future use.

Vitamin E – This fat-soluble vitamin is stored in many places; the heart, liver, reproductive organs, fatty tissue, and muscles. It basically works for the nervous system. It is a potent antioxidant, and helps to combat heart disease, by keeping good cholesterol (HDL) high, blood thin and blood pressure low.

Nutrition Intelligence – The Truth About Your Colon (Fiber & You) – Part 8

It’s not something we talk about. Generally we don’t even want to think about what’s going on inside there. Unless we have a problem. Even then we find it embarrassing.

Recognizing your colon as a major organ which affects the way you feel every day is a step towards improving your life.

Your Colon

The old saying is “death begins in the colon” is literally true. However, I recommend you turn this into a more positive “health begins in the colon”.

Our colon’s function is to act as your body’s sewage system. Effectively eliminating dangerous toxins. Problems occur when this process becomes inefficient, then retained waste leads to re-absorption of toxins into your bloodstream.

Are laxatives the answer? Absolutely not. These may seem like an easy fix. They are not. You can become dependent on them, and over time your colon’s normal ability to naturally eliminate waste will be permanently destroyed. Laxatives should be considered only a very temporary solution to a specific problem.

What your body needs is fiber (or fibre depending on where on the plant you live). Fiber is a safe and natural way of enhancing your body’s ability to rid itself of wastes and toxins.

Fiber acts as:-

  • A Bulking agent – fiber absorbs water in your digestive tract, bulking out the waste matter and allowing it to pass through more easily. This reduces the transit time, therefore reducing your exposure to toxins in the waste. Think of a sponge soaking up the toxins. Studies have confirmed a link between having enough fiber in your diet and a lower risk of colorectal cancer.
  • A Cleansing agent – fiber helps to cleanse the colon by gently sweeping the colon clean of compacted, putrefying, waste materials and helping to eliminate excess cholesterol and dietary toxins. Think of a brush physically cleaning your colon.
  • Fiber also helps normalize blood sugar levels.

The aim of the game is cleansing, detoxifying and improving transit time.

The issue with our modern diet is that it is severely low on fiber. Processed food, refined carbohydrates like bread, biscuits, pastas, soft drinks and polished rice are almost devoid of fiber and nutrients.

As a consequence we suffer conditions like:-

  • constipation
  • hemorrhoids
  • varicose veins
  • headaches
  • digestive problems
  • fatigue/chronic tiredness
  • aches and pains
  • insulin resistance, and eventually diabetes
  • increased risk of cancer

Where can you get high quality fiber? Eat a diet which includes high fiber fresh fruits and vegetables. Supplement your diet with high fiber.

Do You Consider Yourself To Be Healthy – Part 2

We would all love to be able to enjoy the benefits of having optimal health. It’s not really in question is it – it’s a fact.

Surely we all aim to:-

  • Have an abundance of energy all the time
  • be able to look younger than our years
  • be able to perform mentally, as when we were younger
  • be able to react as quickly as when we were young
  • have resilience to infections, even when most others get “the bug”
  • be able to enjoy quality sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed – oh what joy!

There is no “magic bullet” to achieving optimal health. There are things we need to do and not to do (at least to stop doing).

We need to stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol (well, maybe the odd glass of red wine is OK), stop any excessive lifestyle choices like eating fast foods and processed foods which contain lots of fats, sugars and preservatives, drinking sodas, taking drugs.

What we need to do is a longer list which I’ll continue in Part 3.
